Listing Details: San Diego State University has a fantastic drama program that was founded in 1926 as an accompaniment to the English department. The performing arts became very popular within the student body and ended up becoming its own independent department in the 1960s. The theatre is used for student performances throughout the year. The theatre program at the state university provides and education in performing arts including: acting, directing, design, technical theatre and teaching. Every season the San Diego State University theatre program puts on six productions that give ample opportunity to students. The theatre itself is a very large five hundred seat arena that is open to the public for the season’s plays and musicals. There is also another theatre known as the “black box” experimental theatre with only one hundred seventy five seats. The theatre is a member of the organization A Latino Theatre Organization; designed to promote Latino culture in the performing arts.
