Editorial Review of Paul Mitchell School

The Paul Mitchell School is a hidden salon-secret in San Diego. These famous schools reside nation-wide where Paul’s top designers teach eager beauticians-to-be how to style contemporary, modern, and cutting edge hair designs. If you aspire to become a top hair designer, the Paul Mitchell School should be your next stop. However, if the beauty-business isn’t up your alley, Paul also offers alternative innovation for salon-goers who would rather sit back and watch the pro do all the work.

Here’s the secret: while Paul Mitchell Schools welcome students, they also invite average Joes and Janes to enjoy premium salon-style hair cuts, styles, and coloring at a more-than-fair price. Getting your hair cut at a Paul Mitchell School may take a bit longer than traditional salons, however if you have the time—it is well worth it. These students are well-trained and eager to please. And to soothe your nerves, there is a certified professional there at all times to ensure fabulous results.

Added 04/26/11 Lovely, Butchered, Butchered

I've been here 3 times. First time was great, $12 bucks for lovely layers. Second time, I asked for 3 inches off, she took 6. Third time (I went back because I thought I got a fluke student)was the biggest mess, crappy layers and they take soooooo long. Every single appointment took more than 2 hours. Don't think men are safer either. The people here are inexperienced and there aren't enough teachers around to make sure your hair doesn't end up a mess. I'm never going back again, but I least I didn't pay $50 to have my hair butchered by a "pro".

Added 05/10/08 terrible color-service by one of the teachers

I was extremely disappointed, disturbed and offended by the color-services of one of the Paul Mitchell hairdresser, named Patrick Gonzalez. He booked me as a hair-color model for his graduation work ( just to become a teacher - he told me so..) on Friday ( 05/09/08) for 9 AM. He assured me that he is about to become instructor, and he is not a student. What a lie! He messed up so badly with my hair, that I couldn't go to work on the same day. I have medium short brown wavy hair and wanted blond highlights. At the end of his work I looked like a big pumpkin with terrible orange patches here and there.. What a shame! This school should not let people like him teach others.. as a matter of fact I strongly believe that hairstyling industry is wrong for him. I am still looking for a professional hairdresser to fix his mistakes.. It came out so badly, that I must wear a hat to hide my hair, not to mention how much he damaged it. I didn't want to be done by a student and I spoke to him on the phone before the appointment to make sure he knows what he is doing and he assured me that he is very knowledgeable. So be careful and don't believe everything the students say to you, because obviously most of them are pretending to be experienced.. It was my very first experience at the Paul Mitchell school, but never will come back. Shame on you!

FYI:

I just graduated from Paul Mitchell and for those of you who this the Phase 2 students are the students who are about to graduate you are wrong! The phase 2 students are the same as all the other students. You could have 3 people working in Phase 2... one students could be on their first week on the floor...one student could be weeks away from graduating and one student could be in the middle. Phase 2 is usually a reward for doing something good in class. And the only reason it is $5 more is because you are paying for a more realistic "salon" atmosphere!

I asked for a phase 2 student when I booked my appointment, but the girls who did my hair totally butchered it, and didn't know what they were doing. Color was awful- with lines going through it and spots missing- had to go back for a redo and they made it as good as they could on top of the terrible foundation that had been laid down, but I ended up bleaching it all out afterwards and starting over.

Added 09/11/07 Paul Mitchell School in Downtown San Diego

If you just want a cheap trim, Paul Mitchell students are a great choice. However, make sure you get Phase 2 students who are on the accelerated track and know what they're doing. Phase 1 is $5 cheaper, but it's the same as asking ur friend to cut your hair in the kitchen.
