"Zenbu" means "All" in Japanese, and this elusive La Jolla sushi restaurant has enough flavor to please all those who find it. Much of the seafood used in the rolls and dishes is caught directly off the coast by the owner and his partner, and the remainder they handpick on a daily basis. Several rolls are charmingly named after local beaches, like the La Jollan, with grilled Mexican white shrimp, veggies, and yamagobo; and the eclectic Wind-N-Sea, with freshwater eel, tempura banana, avocado, and cucumber. Other notable rolls are the Snow crab-based Zenbu roll, and the "Big Pete", a spicy scallop and vegetable roll topped with Cajun seared tuna. For something a little sleeker, visit the adjoining Koi Lounge, a newish club with its own creative menu.
Few sushi joints in San Diego come close to touching the quality of Zenbu's fish. When it is not hand-caught, it is hand-picked, and the freshness reflects accordingly. High-quality, sushi, however, does indeed come at a high price. I can recall one occasion where a lovely young lady treated me to a $250 meal. Now, while that did include drinks, appetizers and sushi rolls, I still left somewhat hungry. Apparently the restaurant does host a more reasonable happy hour, with discounted drinks and rolls, however, I've yet to experience it firsthand.
