Trattoria La Strada exemplifies the quaint yet urban atmosphere of downtown San Diego. Fanciful paintings of knights and horses adorn the red brick walls of the dining room, otherwise reminiscent of a tame Italian country villa with white tablecloths and polished leather upholstery. The contemporary style bar, on the other hand, is illuminated by hanging blue lights and emits a trendy, modern European vibe.
Executive chef Roberto Bernardoni hails from Tuscany, Italy, and the influence of his Florentine background is vividly apparent on the Trattoria menu. Olive oil, a Tuscan staple, is featured in many dishes, such as the Pollo Alla Diavola, an entrée of chicken leg and thigh marinated in olive oil, herbs, crushed pepper, and served with cherry tomatoes and oven roasted potatoes.
Considering Bernardoni's dedication to authentic Italian cuisine, it comes as no surprise that Trattoria is the winner of the "Insegna de Ristorante Italiano" award for superior achievement in the culinary arts and "goodwill ambassadors" for all Italian things, a prize bestowed by the President of Italy himself. In addition, Trattoria La Strada is a recipient of the "Best of the Best Give Star Diamond Award," making the restaurant one of the top ten Italian restaurants in the United States.
