Point Loma Seafoods possesses no frippery-laden façade, no candlesticks, no violin music. This place is all about the seafood, just-plucked-from-the-sea fresh, vastly varied, and generously portioned. Walk up to the counter — or more likely, wait in line — order your meal, and grab a table while you wait for your number to be called.
The chefs flex sea creatures into every imaginable form: fish taquitos, cold crab or shrimp sandwiches, pickled squid, smoked fish, red and white chowders. There’s even a decent-sized sushi selection, made up of standbys like Philadelphia rolls and spicy tuna rolls. Fillets can also be purchased to go, and if you have the heart, live lobster.
While this place doesn't have the high end frills of other restaurants in the area, they do have the freshest and most delicious seafood available. They make their own cocktail sauce and tarter sauce and it's so good we had to have a gulf shrimp cocktail every day we were there! We had their sandwiches and the crab louis, which were super, and we brought fresh fish home with us. They supplied ice for our trip too! The group of people working there were friendly and knowledgeable. Lunchtime is so busy they have their staff assisting with parking. It seems that all the locals go their for lunch and to pick up fresh and smoked fish to take home. We ate in a few other places, but found ourselves returning again and again to Point Loma Seafoods. The view, as you dine, is of the harbor and you're right next to the water. It's casual but the view rivals other more elegant restaurants!
Being a native San Diegan, I finally decided to go to Point Loma Seafood and see what the hype was all about. I read reviews before I went and the menu looked really good. About 7 of us met up there. Finally found a parking space - be patient. Had the Crab Sandwich which was just ok. Two pieces of sourdough bread with crab. Others ordered the Crab Louis Salad which was nothing more than a bowl of lettuce, some sliced carrots, 2 grape tomatoes and about a quarter cup of shredded crab...for $15! The prices are out of line on that one for sure. While everything looked fresh and the servers were nice, I won't go again. Not much bang for your buck and it's really a hassle to get parking and a table.
