Although sushi is generally paired with pounds of soy and sake; Del Mar’s new sushi restaurant dares you to sip a little bubbly in the presence of raw fish. Pearl Sushi Restaurant and Champagne Lounge graced the Del Mar dining scene fall, 2007.
This upscale Pearl mixes chic Del Mar nightlife with new-age elegant eating for an enhanced sushi experience. Featuring VIP table and bottle service.

Servers were pleasant, nice atmosphere, presentation of food was good.
Cons
Hard to find, too many staff working, food was too "out there", price was WAY too expensive.

All I can say is this place is way over priced for the quality of food you are getting. It's that high end gourmet sushi that honestly looks prettier than it tastes. We went on a Tuesday night and it was pretty quiet, honestly there were more staff than customers. It was very hard to find the place because it is so tucked away in the plaza. We drove by it three times until we decided to get out of the car and walk around to look for it. I think the atmosphere was nice but it was very pretentious and every 3 minutes someone was coming up to us asking how everything was. It was quite annoying. The restaurant just opened a week ago - Sept 14th so they are still working out the kinks. The hot sake machine was not working still so we got way overpriced sake that had to be warmed up somehow and when we received it, it was luke warm if that. The food was less than tasty and extremely overpriced for what you got. For dinner it costs $150 for two of us with tip. If the food could pull it off, the price would be worth it. I won't go again.
Conclusion

Keep trying Pearl. At this rate, you won't be around that long.

Definitely a new and different feel for sushi in San Diego! Amazing new things to try! You can eat and hang out after for drinks and some music.
Cons
Alittle on the expensive side but it is Del Mar!

I am definitely a foodie and this place is AMAZING!! The food, the ambiance, the music, the service....and did I mention the food! The hamachi tacos...a must, the tuna pizza, the beef short rib and the pearl monkey roll all went over with my friends as a big hit!
Conclusion

I would absolutely recommend this place and will be there again this weekend for the Grand Opening.

Ridiculous prices and Unacceptable Management

One would expect more in terms of food quality, service and atmosphere for the prices charged at Pearl. The food misses its mark in terms of freshness, orginality, and presentation. The only good thing of our dinner was the miso soup. Several items from the sashimi bar were sent back for "fishiness" only to be told by the waitstaff and the restaurant management that perhaps we "were not accustomed to the high end quality of the fish." (One of our guest diners lived in Japan for three years!) The waitstaff, including the bartenders, were slow in service and lacked basic etiquette training. The underlying issue with the restaurant is the unclear vision of this establishment...is it to be a nightclub or a legitimate fine dining establishment? (Which with this price point, one would surmise) At 10:00, our table was turned for "table service" (with no pre-warning when we made the reservations, nor when we were seated at our table, AND before we were done with dining) with no alternative seating offered to us. The management was downright hostile to us when we voiced our concerns, to again result in no satisfaction. Clearly, the vision of this restaurant is to attract the late 20s/early 30s crowd, who perhaps are willing to put up with the "red rope/door bouncer" mentality, but more seasoned (and arguably, well-heeled) diners will not tolerate the establishment for more than one visit.
Conclusion

Would never recommend this restaurant, or any restaurant owned by this proprietor to my colleagues, friends, or clients.
