Sorry to say, but we had a negative experience and won't go back. One of our party never got their food, waitress apologized but manager never even came over & said anything. And they should have at least taken that meal off the bill, but no. Nothing done but an apology from waitress. After almost one year, no liquor license so wine with dinner is out. (We were there in May for a party on patio & had good service, food, allowed to bring our own wine). This time it was overpriced, food not hot, not much flavor. Sorry...we thought we had a good thing here...but we won't go back.
Conclusion
Not recommended.
Francesco is rude to employeesWe have dined at Mama Mia five times. The food is good, not great, and we were able to ignore Francesco's over the top "Hollywood" Italian act. What we couldn't ignore was the language he used when he scolded his server for not turning her tables fast enough to suit him. He used extremely bad language, albeit in Italian so most people wouldn't understand. Since we are Italian-American and speak the language we understood everything he said to her. We haven't been back since. So, Francesco and Mama Mia, Ciao!Posted on: 2/9/2008 By Momster

I took my girlfriend to Mamma Mia and she loved it just as much as I did. They have hearty pasta as well as nutritious salads. Not too over priced either.
Conclusion
Mamma mia has a wide variety of Italian cuisine. Great place to awe your girlfriend.

Upon my fourth visit, it dawned on me that owner Francesco is starting to believe his own press and acting accordingly.
Francesco, if you're reading this, please cut out the oh-so phony crapadoodle, lower your voice, sit down and meditate. There's no reason to pitch a cantate at your staff in your Danny Bonaduce stacatto rasp. Pfffffft.
Let your wife do her cooking in peace. It's your saving grace. How she can turn out her delicacies with your screeching is beyond me. She's a saint.

The first “dinner and language class” event at the Mamma Mia restaurant has been a total blast. Our gests have learned some Italian language while enjoying wine, food and each other’s company.
We have received such good feedback that we want to propose a second night on October 5th for those people who could not attend the first
Come to Mamma Mia for a night of real fun!

Whenever I'm in San Diego, this is the first place I head to for a great dinner and even better service by Francesco & Cinzia & and rest of the staff. Dine like you're in Italy, but bring your own wine.
Conclusion
Love this place and the people in it.
Numbered ratings should be 1 star - notSomehow my review "numbers" indicates that i highly rated this restaurant. Nothing could be further from the truth. Read what I wrote and ignore the star rating.

The host is completely amped out and yelling constantly. We could not talk to each other. Its obnoxious. I am Sicilian and no one in my family behaves like this. The owner seems to have no respect for the customers and that they may want to listen to each other - not him. He was so loud that I could not hear what the waitress was saying and she could not hear what we were saying. Not surprising, we got our appetizer and soup/salad, but the main course never showed up. She did write it down on the check, but the person cooking didn't see it, so we never got to eat our entree. By that time we just wanted to get away from the owner yelling in semi lewd Italian, that we told her that we just wanted to go. I am not a chef, but anyone in my family at anytime, could produce more tasty food that we had. It was very ordinary. I have had superior Italian food in even the modest Marino's a few blocks away. This gentle Sicilian family produces honest and delicious food in a relatively quiet, family atmosphere. If you want more upscale fare, Bella is just a few steps away. They are both good. As for Moma Mia - as one patron tried to shout over the owner - why are you yelling so much! I cannot believe anyone would return there.
Conclusion
Get a hotdog at 7-11 - you will feel better
