Editorial Review of La Gran Tapa

La Gran Tapa was first conceptualized and brought into being in 1984 by Paul Dobson. The original menu was all tapas, small plates to be shared, and was specifically Spanish cuisine. Since the opening, a second take on the Euro Tapas scene, Turquoise Café Bar Europa, was created in north Pacific Beach. The recent re-opening of La Gran Tapa remembers all of what it was and adds to that by encompassing more than just the tapas of Spain. It reaches out to the tapas experience for every place that identifies with it, all of the Mediterranean, Eastern and Western Europe, and the Near Orient.

Added 03/11/13 Best Tapas Restaurant in SD!

The kitchen turns out both traditional tapas of cured meats, cheeses and marinated seafood, and such substantial plates as paella Valenciana. Madrid is invoked with bullfight posters and other typical Iberian embellishments, and the wine list contains some nice, reasonably priced Spanish vintages. Friday nights boast a prix-fixe menu and Flamenco dancer show for another window into Spanish culture and fun food.
