There are a number of Karl Strauss Breweries dispersed throughout the county, but this Sorrento Mesa location stands out. Nicknamed "The Brewery Gardens," the restaurant is awash with peaceful koi ponds and lush vegetation, a romantic place to bring a date in an area where that sort of thing is scarce.
Who knew there was a such thing as gourmet pub food? But Karl Strauss has carved the niche. Instead of your average french fries, the brewery’s are served spicy Cajun or garlic parmesan style. Salads range from chopped to spinach sirloin, and the grilled portobello pizza is phenomenal. Many other dishes implement some of Strauss’s signature brews into the mix, such as the honey lager chicken with wontons and peanuts, the lemon "hef" chicken, and the pilsner-battered fish and chips. And of course, it’s mandatory to sample the taps.
We went there for my friend's birthday and we had a pretty great time. The food was decent, but the portions seemed kinda small to me. But who goes there for the food?! It's about the beer right? There was a huge selection of beer to choose from... my weapon of choice was The Arrogant Bastard... good stuff but I'll have to pay another visit to see what else they have to offer. The garden was also pretty amazing and we were lucky enough to be there during their movie night... They played Spinal Tap on a big screen! Good times.
Whoever wrote this email needs be sure that they have the correct restaurant before they bash a place. Karl Strauss doesn't have Arrogant Bastard beer they only have their own brews & the portions of food are huge.
Overall just as described by other reviewer - very nice garden surrounding the restaurant. The food was just so-so for us though. A bit on the pricey side if you consider the food quality alone.
My husband took me to this restuarant for my birthday and I fell completely in love with it before we even got inside the restuarant! the garden outside was lovely. The food was impressive, way better than I expected from a brewery. And of course, the Karl Strauss beer was choice as usual.
Karl Strauss is a well-known local San Diego brewer. The Scranton Road location is the nicest of its the venues...aesthetically anyway. There is an incredibly beautiful asian-themed garden outside the physical brewery/restaurant. This garden is like a giant forest. In fact, it's worth going here just to see the garden. However, the actual place is also just as wonderful as the garden that surrounds it. There is a very classy feel to the dining area, but they simultaneously keep a vibe that is down to earth. The workers here are very polite and the food is choice.
