Editorial Review: (View User Reviews)

The $5 million, 15,000 sq. ft. Universal features four distinct, urban entertainment concepts: the restaurant Dish at Universal, The Garden, and the ultra-hip indoor ultra-lounge with a dance floor and a Ciro's Pizzeria. A principal attraction of the Universal experience, Dish features a synergy of taste and mood – a modern twist on comfort food with favorites designed to appeal to a plethora of palates. Chef Antonio Friscia scours the San Diego landscape for sustainable sources of seasonal ingredients around which to build his menus of organic comfort food. Playing off the fresh and local fare, the environment inside Dish reflects a natural charm; an abundance of natural light dances atop the lush color scheme. Also check out Universal – the super-chic club located across the garden.

After being seated, it took 15 minutes before we were ever approached by our server. The place was far from busy when we arrived. He then took our drink and appetizer order. He proceeded then to go visit three other tables before placing our drink order at the bar. It took another 15 minutes before our drinks arrived. There was very much a lack of organization at this restaurant. Lots of employees around, but noone seeming to be getting anything done. The food quality was ok, but nothing to write home about. As you looked around the restaurant you could see that other customers were not impressed by the lack of service as well. Drink prices were outrageous. One person in our party ordered a Manhattan, it was $20, because he called his liquor preference. At one point when we ordered a second round of drinks, were told 15 minutes after ordering them and wondering what was taking so long that the bar was backed up. This place has alot of things to work on if it plans on seeing any kind of repeat business from first time visitors.
Conclusion

This place needs to get their act together if it expects to survive in the Hillcrest area.

Hillcrest is suppose to have the best restaurants in San Diego. What happened to this one? The food is NASTY and the wine selection stinks. Not to mention the waiter was so nervous that it made us uncomfortable. I think her knew the food succed.
Conclusion

We will never return.
