Editorial Review: (View User Reviews)

Catch a desired window seat at tropical eatery Bali Ha’i, and you can pretend you’re in the islands as you overlook the San Diego Bay. While the hula floorshows have faded into the past, the Hawaiian cuisine cooked up by the restaurant’s creative chefs is so good, you might do a little hula yourself. Start off by sampling the Hawaiian nachos, really fried won tons smothered in cheese, guacamole and pineapple salsa. Guaranteed tiki-tastic entrees are the breaded "Chicken of the Gods", the garlic roasted prawns in a parmesan bowl, and the Island sampler, which includes seared ahi, Atlantic salmon, and macadamia-crusted mahi. Another standout is the Salmon Wellington, stuffed with crab and spinach and wrapped in a puff pastry.

So, after hearing rave reviews about the Bali Ha'i from numerous sources, I decided to see what all the fuss was about and reserved a table for my birthday. Now, I must admit, the view is spectacular, and indeed worth the price. The food, however, is not. Their island fare falls short in the flavor department, and seemed to disappoint all around. The restaurant's stiff tropical drinks made up for the bland food, however, and after a few of their "famous" mai tais, I forgot all about the sub-par meal.
Conclusion

There are few better locations for drinking in the San Diego sunsets - literally and figuratively. For true "island" fare, however, you're better off going elsewhere.
