Universal in Hillcrest is the latest EnDev nightlife creation bringing a Gaslamp edge to the diverse culture of this unique neighborhood. Previously known for crass club names and dim corridors packed with an eclectic group of partygoers on the hunt for extreme drink specials, Hillcrest is now seen in a new light. The $5 million, 15,000 sq. ft. Universal features four distinct, urban entertainment concepts: the new restaurant Dish @ Universal; The Garden, and the ultra-hip indoor ultra-lounge with a dance floor and a Ciro's Pizzeria. Vibrant hues and artsy displays of elegant design flash across the spacious club. From the multicolored checkered ceiling to the dangling ultra-mod chandeliers, every ounce of lounge space screams high-energy, but the tone never trips on trashy and maintains an upscale vibe with emphatic attention on fun. Hillcrest’s Universal hosts top San Diego DJs such as Erik Diaz and Freddie Fresh and caters non-exclusively to the gay community with weekly and monthly special events such as Gentleman’s Martini Night.
