Editorial Review of The Better Half

Bring your significant other to the romantic patio adorned with glittering lights and most, homey décor to enjoy a unique selection of wine and unique bistro delights. The Better Half encourages guests to start out with a lighter, white wine for appetizers and switch to a deeper red for the second course. It’s a simple idea – which is why it works. Chef John Kennedy prepares inventive appetizers such as the “Leaning Tower” of Beets and Mediterranean Indigo Mussels. The entrée variation includes Cabernet Short Rib and Stuffed Montezuma Quail. The long wine list may overwhelm at first – but the caring Better Half will always share expertise.

Added 06/19/09 Aloof staff

The wait staff and owner here are so aloof. They all look like they are fresh out of prison.Ive never seen alot of customers in here so the food cant be fresh.I attempted to eat here but never got seated because they were all having a cigarette break so it seems.

Added 04/18/08 Excellent place for food & Wine

After reading numerous reviews in the local magazines, we decided to give them a try. The name “The Better Half” is the owner’s play on word for his extensive wine list consisting entirely of half bottles of wine. We selected three different half bottles based on our server’s recommendation and were very pleased with the wines. None of the bottles were over $25. We also decided to sample different items from the first and second course. Between the three of us we ordered the savory tart du jour, the bacon belly and the mussels. All dishes were excellent to taste and had top-notch plate presentation. For our second course, we opted for the duo of duck, the veal cheeks and the quail. Absolutely incredible! For dessert, we chose the bread pudding and were very satisfied with it. Apparently, the bread pudding is the Chef’s grandmother’s recipe. Based on the quality of food, ambience and level of service, this place is an excellent value. Money well spent. I love the display of empty half bottles on the patio wall. If you’re planning on going there on weekends, make reservation. There is also a $3 parking lot on First between University and Washington.
