Koi Lounge doesn’t need to litter the sidewalks with fliers to broadcast its entertainment value, nor shake the walls with eardrum-aching beats. Instead, the little lounge, owned and operated by the popular Zenbu Sushi two doors down, presents an intimate, glossy nightlife experience. Its fame has been spread overwhelmingly by word-of-mouth.
The interior, dominated by a splashy koi mural, is golden, glowy, and understated. A tad more casual than other La Jolla night spots, Zenbu attracts a classy crowd who doesn’t flaunt its Armani. The sushi chefs hailing from Zenbu have utilized the lounge’s existence to roll up experimental cuisine, usually with favorable and (changeable) results.
