Cinco de Drinko? Cinco de Mayo parties

Tequila and tacos rule this weekend in San Diego

It’s common knowledge that April showers bring forth an abundance of tequila and carne asada. It’s time to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Grab some Don Julio to keep you company, maracas for ultimate noise-making and a big ol’ sombrero for statement-making fashion. Okay fine, add a mustache too.

Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo: This three-day free fiesta takes place from May 2 to May 4 in Old Town. A San Diego tradition since 1983, locals can explore the area surrounded by four live music stages, two cantina beer gardens, a low rider car show and a children’s area. There will also be lively ballet folklorico, a Mercado with handcrafted jewelry and a high-end tequila sampling area. Surrounding restaurants will boast drink and food specials.

Cuatro de Mayo at El Camino: This spot has become notorious for out-of-control Cinco de Mayo parties. But this year, they’re not waiting around for May 5th. They’ll claim Sunday, May 4 as their day to party with a solid DJ lineup (Adam Salter, DJ Beatnick, Kanye Asada and more), $2 tacos, $5 tequila shots, $5 fireball shots, $5 margaritas and a $10 bottomless tang michelada fountain. They’ll also bring back the Darth Zonkey (yeah, it’s a donkey/zebra hybrid) with a photobooth. 11 a.m. to close. 2400 India St., Little Italy.

Cinco de Mustache at Belly Up: The ultimate '80s cover band, The Young Guns, play at this year’s Cinco de Mustache party on Saturday, May 3. Flaunt your finest ‘stache. 9 p.m. $14-$16. 143 S. Cedros Ave., Solana Beach.

Cinco Weekend at Avenue: Starting on May 2, Avenue in Pacific Beach will throw a four-day bash with DJs and drink specials. The lineup includes DJ Alo on Friday, May 2, DJ Jeramiah James on Saturday, May 3, DJ Tantrum on Sunday May 4, and Cinco de Karaoke on Monday, May 5. Add the perfect zest to your night with Dos XX and Espolón margarita specials. 1060 Garnet Ave., Pacific Beach.

Don Chido: The highly-anticipated Mexican eatery from RMD Group is set to open mid-May, but they’re celebrating early with a little Cinco de Mayo taco fiesta. On May 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., locals can stop by Don Chido’s patio for .55 cent carne asada tacos, chips, guacamole and homemade agua fresca drinks drinks. Chef Antonio Friscia will be on hand to share his new space, too. 527 5th Ave., Gaslamp.

Venga Venga Cantina and Tequila Bar: In Otay Ranch Town Center, the new Venga Venga is eager to celebrate their first Cinco de Mayo in San Diego. Head in on Thursday, May 1 for the launch of their 1st Annual Guacamole Festival; Friday, May 2 for Noches de Venga with dancing and drinking; Saturday, May 3 for live international beats and dance music from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. and $1 margaritas 10 to 11 p.m.; Sunday, May 4 for a bottomless brunch and Monday, May 5 with live mariachis and pop-up tequila tasting. 2015 Birch Rd., Suite 710, Chula Vista.

Puesto at The Headquarters: On Monday, May 5, guests at Puesto can enjoy $6 margaritas and a Casa Noble Tequila tasting from 6 p.m. to close. Feeling competitive (and hungry)? The guest who eats the most tacos from 6 to 7 p.m. will win a free taco every Tuesday for life. 789 W. Harbor Dr. Seaport Village.

Tavern: Five days of beer specials make this Cinco de Mayo celebration stand out. Starting Thursday, May 1, sip $3 Corona Lights with beats by Paulo da Rosa and DJ Who. They’re also promoting a new menu, with drinks like El Choncho, a mix of Espolón Reposado tequila, jalapeño, agave nectar syrup, and fresh lime juice, served in a tajín-rimmed glass. 1200 Garnet Ave., Pacific Beach.

Alfonso’s: Join the party at Alfonso’s Mexican Restaurant in La Jolla as they also celebrate their 43rd anniversary. The Cinco de Mayo festivities will get underway May 2 to 5 with live music from 12 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 10 p.m., house margaritas for $3.95 and a combo plate with chicken taco, bean tostada and rice and beans for $6.95. 1251 Prospect St., La Jolla.
