San Diego is primed and ready for the biggest Comic-Con yet! Downtown bars will be packed with costumed revelers wanting to hold on to that other-dimensional feeling outside of the convention center. Like answering to the Batman sky symbol, these restaurants and cocktail locales have risen to the call.
Saltbox, Hotel Palomar: This beautifully remodeled restaurant invites ’Con revelers in with interesting cocktails full of comic juxtaposition. La Flama Blanca includes tea-infused Jimador tequila, grapefruit juice, thyme cane syrup and a float of Pabst Blue Ribbon, garnished with one of Chef Jeremian Bryant’s fried pickles. Feeling a bit more macabre? Try The Bon Temps Blood Bank, with Ron Zacapa Rum, beet puree, lemon juice, ginger cane syrup and chocolate bitters, topped with ginger beer and a roasted beet round. Available only Thursday, July 24-Sunday, July 27.
Altitude Sky Lounge, Marriot Gaslamp: No need to leap buildings in a single bound when you can hang out on top of one with a cocktail. Feel like Clark Kent’s alter-ego with the Superman, featuring Stoli vanilla, orange and raspberry vodka, white cranberry and pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine. Bring down the house with Thor’s Hammer, a power shot of orange vodka, peach Schnapps and orange juice dropped into a glass of Red Bull. You might not be as good-looking as Chris Hemsworth, but you’ll feel just as strong.
Encore Champagne Bar: For an upscale Comic-Con experience, head over to Encore. Cocktails include the villainous Joker Juice, with Russian Standard vodka, creme de cassis, lemon juice, soda, topped with a pour of Piper-Heidsieck Brut Cuvee Champagne and rimmed with sour apple candy. Heroes beware of their Kryptonite cocktail and it’s Pop Rocks rim, while brawny revelers might try The Hammered Hulk, with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Malibu Coconut Rum, Blue Curacao, Midori and pineapple. Or if you are feeling exhausted and more like a comic book page than the hero on it, a simple Fizztastic Four Champagne Flight will pep you back into your costume as fast as a speeding bullet.
RoofTop 600 @Andaz: Let your superhero cape fly in the wind while prospecting your next adventure on top of the Andaz. Star Trek fans will love the Beam Me Up Scotty, a perfect post Comic-Con shot with coffee liqueur, crème de banana and Bailey’s. Energy field low? Vintage and newbie Mario Brothers fans can recharge with the Power Up cocktail, including orange flavored vodka, peach Schnapps and Red Bull.
