Downtown Openings: Lucky Liu's, Moonshine Flats

Chinese cuisine, champagne and line dancing? Downtown sure is spicing things up. Here’s a brief rundown of the restaurant and entertainment venue openings this month.  

Lucky Liu’s - 332 J Street

Vibe: You’ll find comfort Chinese dishes here. Order the spinach and shrimp dumplings, cream cheese fried wontons, steamed BBQ pork buns, Mongolian beef and Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. Plus, special entrees from owner Alex Thao’s grandmother’s secret menu like black pepper filet mignon, oolong sea bass and steamed salmon. On the weekends, Lucky Liu’s will serve downtown’s first dim sum (traditional Chinese brunch).

Opening: Lucky Liu’s held a soft opening on Jan. 20. Their grand opening will occur in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration held in the Gaslamp on Feb. 8 and 9.

Location: Half a block from the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum

Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday; 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. Saturday and Sunday

Encore Champagne Bar & Dining Room – 531 F Street

Vibe: Find French and Mediterranean influences on a San Diego-fresh menu created by Executive Chef Ryan Studebaker. For a snazzy dinner date, order caviar and blinis with smoked salmon and crème fraiche, duck confit risotto to share and seared day boat scallops as your entrée.  

Of course, the real focus here is the champagne. Bottles range from extra-brut to demi-sec with sparkling wines coming in from around the world. Order by the glass or try one of the creative cocktails such as the sparkling hibiscus margarita.

Opening: Encore officially opened with a toast on Jan. 15.

Moonshine Flats – 344 Seventh Ave.

Vibe: Think honky-tonk bar with a bit of sex-appeal. This is your new downtown spot for line dancing, karaoke and imbibing along five bars, including the longest bar on the west coast (coming in at 80 feet). Oh, and let’s not forget, San Diego’s largest dance floor, a pool table, alcohol slushie machines and arcade games.  

Opening: Moonshine Flats is hosting a grand opening party for the public on Feb. 13. The party will include line dancing, karaoke with the Moonshine Flats’ house band and DJs spinning all night. $5 door charge; 100% of the revenues from the evening will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

Location: The old Block No. 16 spot

Hours: 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Sunday

Coyote Ugly – 820 Fifth Ave.

Vibe: This infamous bar, restaurant and entertainment venue which has locations all over the world is opening the first Southern California spot right here in downtown San Diego. The concept focuses on western-themed style with bartenders performing routines on top of the bar (yep, just like in the “Coyote Ugly” movie).

Opening: Have your cowboy boots on by Feb. 5

Location: Replacing Frauds and Swindlers

Hours: 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week

City Sights - 660 K Street

Vibe: City Sights is a chic extension to the pre-existing ALTITUDE Sky Lounge in the San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter hotel. It’s enhanced the rooftop bar’s recent makeover with additional views of San Diego, a new full bar, communal tables and a glass-lined balcony, now offering guests a near 360-degree outlook of the urban landscape below and 4,000 square feet of socializing space. Sip the champagne raspberry mojito, blueberry pomegranate mojito, white sangria and more.

Opening: Up and celebrating since New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31, 2013)
