Everything goes better with a swimming pool, so make a splash while enjoying some of the best craft cocktails and delectable small bites at the buzz-worthy scene at the SummerSalt Pool Deck and Lounge.
Located on the fourth floor of the Hotel Palomar in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, the pool bar is open to the public daily. Additionally, the pool is open from 7 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays for pool parties and special events. Specials include half-off all specialty cocktails before 9 p.m. and $100 bottles before 9 p.m. for bottle service.
“We’ve created a scene that, while it’s high energy, it’s also a controlled environment,” said Christopher Hile, director of food and beverage at Hotel Palomar. “It’s a pretty fun scene up there right now, but we do have rules and our guests respect them.”
Hile said Hotel Palomar has worked hard to rework the image created by the pool’s previous owners. The pool used to be known as a heavy party area, which attracted the kind of crowd that Hotel Palomar is not interested in hosting.
“We’ve worked very hard over the last two years to rebrand and to let people know that we’re not what we used to be,” Hile said. “That’s not really the image we wanted to create. It was a conscious effort on our part to make that well known.”
Unlike its predecessor, SummerSalt now caters to the 32- to 48-year-old crowd, reminding them there is plenty of fun to be had in the pool.
In order to attract that age group to SummerSalt, Hile said Hotel Palomar books DJs from all over the world for their Sunday night pool parties and brings in local DJs for Fridays and Saturdays. “We’re going after more established DJs who have a following in that age demographic,” he said.
In addition to the fabulous pool and rocking DJs, SummerSalt features some of the most insanely inventive bartenders around. After all, a pool party isn’t much fun without cocktails.
The kind of drinks served borrows inspiration from Prohibition-style classics and goes modern with SummerSalt originals. Among the creative original cocktails SummerSalters have enjoyed is the Jamaican Shark Attack, a delectable concoction consisting of rum, green chartreuse, roasted strawberry and fennel syrup. A variety of local craft beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages round out the drink list.
The poolside will remain open and rocking until the end of October.
