Jay Gatsby has requested your attendance at an over-indulgent affair. Plan accordingly.
Okay, so Leo DiCaprio won’t exactly be making an appearance in San Diego anytime soon. But, one local restaurant is hosting a dinner that exudes pure Gatsby glam in honor of the upcoming film. As the premiere nears (Friday, May 10 people – cancel all previous plans, this one’s going to knock your pretty socks off), anticipation builds. And for that, we need a rich meal and a strong drink.
The Wellington Steak & Martini Lounge -- which at its core is so Gatsby with crystal chandeliers glowing dimly in intimate, speakeasy-style ways -- will host a Great Gatsby-themed dinner on Wednesday, May 8 and Thursday, May 9.
On Wednesday, May 8, the steakhouse led by Chef Miguel Valdez will serve a Pacific crab and Baja shrimp Newburg (pictured left) on wilted garden greens in a pastry crust, along with a “Waldorf”-inspired peeled grape salad. And on Thursday, May 9, indulge in a Meyer certified humane New York strip with breaded, pan fried sweet breads, sautéed garden chard and a root vegetable and potato salad. Both dishes are priced at $32.
Snake Oil Cocktail Co. will also be on hand to pour two sumptuous cocktails, aptly named The Flapper and Owl Eyes.
The Wellington’s regular menu will be offered alongside these special dishes. Of course, there is no such swanky soiree without live jazz - the sort that Gatsby would approve of. On Wednesday, Tom Griesgraber will play the chapman stick and on Thursday, Sarah Maisel and Paul Tillery will perform on the ukulele and standup bass, respectively.
For reservations, please call 619.295.6001. The Wellington is located at 729 W. Washington St., Mission Hills. thewellingtonsd.com
