Food Buzz: Jon Mangini to Open Brewery

Just when you thought we couldn’t squeeze one more brewery on the San Diego map, a local restaurant leader has decided to throw his hat in the ring.

Jon Mangini – the force and vision behind URBN Coal Fired Pizza in North Park and Vista, BASIC Urban Kitchen + Bar in East Village and Gang Kitchen downtown – has announced that by early 2014, he’ll open his third URBN Coal Fired Pizza along with a yet-to-be-named brewery in El Cajon.

The property has already been claimed, and it’s a doozy. The 4,000 square feet on the corner of Magnolia Ave. and Main Street once served as El Cajon Brewing Company in its past life, and will now get the Mangini treatment in food, drink and décor. To those who know and love the URBN Restaurant Inc.’s vibe, the same “less is more” approach will be taken in creating a consistent, comfortable and casual feel.

The brewery is Mangini’s first step outside of the restaurant realm, so he’s calling on the help of partner Alex Carballo, the former Executive Chef over at Stone Brewing Company. The two are currently assembling teams to take on the tall order of a new brewery production, with plans to distribute the beer to all URBN restaurants and throughout San Diego.

Food wise, expect the same traditional thin-crusted pies that URBN is known for, along with a few new pub-inspired treats from Chef Carballo like wings, salads and more.

“El Cajon is uncharted territory for the group, and I love the idea of being able to offer the neighborhood something new and totally original,” said Jon Mangini in a press release. “In regards to the new brewery, quality beer has always been a passion of the collective, and we’re excited to share our interpretation of what great beer should be with the rest of San Diego.”
