Vista’s eight craft breweries are helping to celebrate the city’s 50th anniversary this year by creating special-edition beers, including two that will be served this weekend at two local breweries.
Local brewers said they were approached by Vista Economic Development Director Kevin Ham with the idea of creating special anniversary beers and they hopped at the chance, said Daniel Love, who heads the Vista Brewer’s Guild.
“We’re excited about it,” Love said.
The city has been supportive of its fledgling brewery industry and wanted to participate in the celebration, Love said.
Mother Earth Brewery is scheduled to serve its Vista 50th anniversary beer Saturday, Love said. The beer is an aggressive, hoppy San Diego pale ale with Simcoe dry hops, Love said.
“The city has been a huge help for the past three years, and I am glad we ended up here and not in another city,” Love said.
About 310 gallons of Mother Earth’s special 50th anniversary beer was brewed and will be available to customers.
On Sunday, Aztec Brewing will serve its “Hasta la Vista” beer to members of the City Council city officials and the public at its tasting room, said John Webster, the brewery’s marketing director.
Hasta la Vista is a German style beer known as dunkelweizen, or a dark version of what is commonly known as a hefeweizen, he said.
“I’m pretty excited,” Webster said. “We like to do special and seasonal beers so that we don’t do the same thing over and over all year.”
The name Hasta la Vista was coined by Aztec Brewing CFO Claudia Faulk, a play on the city’s name.
“On the surface, the fanciful name has that fun Arnold Schwarzenegger ‘Terminator’ cliché going on,” Faulk said. “But it’s also our way of saying goodbye to 50 years of history as Vista moves ahead into the future.”
The city’s Golden Anniversary is being marked in a yearlong series of community events, which started last month with the Chamber’s Holiday Parade and the unveiling of the 50th anniversary logo.
Vista breweries will be collaborating throughout the year to celebrate the anniversary with more brews, tours and events, officials said. Aztec will follow up Hasta la Vista with another beer this summer that will likely be a lighter seasonal brew.
