SD's Answer to Pike Place Throws a Party

You already know the San Diego Public Market, an indoor food bazaar happening Wednesdays and Sundays. Occupying a former factory on National Avenue, there are plans to make it a mansion-sized farmers market and one of San Diego's biggest draws. (Founders Dale Steele and Catt White are working to expand its footage, programming and weekly calendar).

 

And the food scene combines forces this Sunday evening for a feast there, called Taste of the Market.

 

You'll recognize the names setting up shop in that space’s Market Hall--George’s at the Cove chef Trey Foshee and Whisknladle/Prepkitchen’s Ryan Johnston will cook for the Sunday smorgasbord. And we have it on good authority that chef/consultant Andrew Spurgin is cranking out oyster po' boys at the event; Alchemy chef Ricardo Heredia is roasting whole pig in a caja china for caldo verde; and chef/consultant Melissa Mayer’s making smoked chicken tortas.

 

Enhancing the work of more than a dozen featured chefs will be farmers, specialty food makers like Bread & Cie plus adult beverages by Stone Brewing, Julian Hard Cider and Snake Oil Cocktail Co.

 

The Taste of the Market is a kind of “coming-out” party for the prepared food vendors who lease space at the Public Market (like Casanova Fish Tacos and Supernatural Sandwiches). There'll be live music, food stations and tours of the full 92,000-square-foot site.

 

Funds from the $85 ticket will help build an onsite Market Kitchen, “a micro-business incubator and community culinary education center at the San Diego Public Market.” The market was initially funded through Kickstarter.
