San Diego Model Profile: Meet Lindsay Hawley

Lindsay Hawley embraces the business side of beauty. Model turned agency owner, the 24-year-old natural blonde is passionate about philanthropy, and incorporates the art of giving back into every element of her life. Hawley’s diverse schedule takes her from VIP parties at Sundance, to our downtown city streets where she volunteers to feed the homeless. And when she’s not posing with a purpose, you can find Hawley kayaking in La Jolla, thrift store shopping, or catching a live show at House of Blues.

 

Q: Why did you want to be a model?A: Since I was in diapers I would wear my mom's high heels around the house, play dress up and put on performances for my parents. I was more into theatre and acting growing up, but around 19, I started booking modeling gigs through friends who asked me to be in certain campaigns for them.

Q: Most exciting modeling jobs so far?A: The last three years I have been the lead model and model coordinator for GUESS at their special events, so we have done everything from Coachella private parties at the Coachella Oasis, to SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, and the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

There really are too many memorable moments to pick a favorite but getting a chance to talk with Tony Hsieh, the founder of Zappos and author of one of my favorite books, Delivering Happiness, at Sundance was a highlight. I got to tell him how his book inspired me to start my business and incorporate philanthropy and giving into almost everything I do. He was really appreciative I shared my story and has since advised me on my new venture, LiveMoreHappy.com, and is now a dear friend. 

Q: What local companies do you work with?

A: Locally, I absolutely love the PR company Elle Communications. They are focused on nonprofit and for purpose ventures and brands. Anytime I get a chance to work with Danielle Gano and her team I am thrilled. My favorite clothing brand that I have worked with is Irie Ride. They are local artists, (both graphic and paint) who have created the Irie Ride brand to represent the lifestyle that embodies San Diego; loving life, loving nature, being peaceful and happy and all things that I strive for daily.

Q: Tell us about your company LMH Promotions.A: It was started almost on accident. I was working with another company that dissolved. I formed LMH Promotions to continue to help my marketing clients. I have worked with non profits like the Outdoor Education Foundation, WildCoast and now Urban Angels where myself and several other models volunteer to feed the homeless every week at Connections Housing.

Supporting good causes is my passion and modeling and managing models has been a great way to put money in the bank so we can continue to do the things that really matter and make a difference.

Q: What would we be surprised to discover about the modeling industry?A: Print modeling is usually pretty miserable. You are usually cold, hungry, and have been getting ready for the last four hours with people touching your face and pulling your hair. Then you have to hold awkward poses until the photographer feels like he nailed the shot.

Q: Should all models strive to be positive role models?A: I think models are in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. Someone can be 5'10 and look like Heidi Klum but if they have a bad attitude and are not a pleasure to work with they will not make it as far as Heidi Klum. She is an example of what true beauty is; a good heart and a great attitude that everyone likes to be around.

Q: Do you feel pressure to move to L.A.?

A: San Diego is definitely a small pond. It is easy to be a "big deal" here, so it is easier to get booked locally. I like that it is such a small community of awesome people who support each other and is not as cut throat as L.A. However, if you are serious about any career in media or entertainment, L.A. or New York are where you will make it big. I go to L.A. for gigs sometimes twice a month and am grateful for how much work is available in L.A., but I am always happy to come back home to San Diego. 

Q: How do you stay in such great shape?A: San Diego is the best city for staying in shape! I always say that nature is my gym. I go rollerblading on the boardwalk in Pacific Beach, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking in La Jolla Shores, hiking in Mission Trails, bike riding, tennis, surfing and I walk places. I also recently took up juicing.

Q: Where will your next adventure take you?A: I am off to the Yucatan, Mexico for two weeks. I will be volunteering at a school in a village, exploring Mayan ruins and living out my Indiana Jones fantasies while working on my tan!

Q: What is your perfect San Diego weekend?

A: Most events I work are on weekends, however, if I have time off I love to be at the beach either surfing, kayaking or just playing in the sand. I love any excuse to grab a Rubicon Deli sandwich in Mission Beach and eat it while watching the sunset or late night happy hour after 10pm at Harney Sushi in Old Town. Last Friday I hosted a Hair Bow making party at my house with 15 of my girlfriends crafting bows for girls with cancer at Rady's Hospital for Valentine’s Day. Pura Vida bracelets, another local brand I model for, donated 150 hippie headbands for our cause. We had a blast doing good. That was my ideal Friday night!

I love live music so any chance to see a show at the Belly Up, House of Blues or just a little jazz show at Cafe Europa in P.B., I'll take it. I'm not big into bars or clubs but I never have a bad time at El Dorado downtown. You don't have to be a hipster or dressed up to boogie down at this spot. They have amazing crafted cocktails without the pretentious attitudes and their live music is always good.
