Mother's Day Dining

This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 12. Families big and small will spoil mom with lavish fine dining and extensive buffet spreads. Mind your manners and make your reservations early for Mother’s Day brunch in San Diego.

For a Music-Powered Mama

House of Blues (1055 Fifth Ave. 619.299.2583 or will host a double Gospel Brunch, debuting their new high-energy show produced by Grammy-Award winning gospel music icon Kirk Franklin. Get down with their southern-inspired buffet. 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. $39.50 per adult; $17.50 per child 6 to 12; free for 5 and under.

Meanwhile, live jazz tunes will swing out of The US GRANT Hotel (326 Broadway. 619.744.2039 or over a massive buffet of breakfast eats, seafood and sweet treats. 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. $74 per adult; $64 per senior; $24 per child 12 and under.

Later in the day, The Shout! House (655 4th Ave. 619.231.6700 or will host their first-ever Family Night, catered especially to kids. Sing along to soundtrack classics and pop hits while embarrassing mom. This PG show will also include a pizza and soda package for $14.95. For the Mother Earth-Revering Mom

Terra American Bistro’s (7091 El Cajon Blvd. 619.293.7088 or brunch is an organic party of steak and eggs, a grilled shrimp salad and a California bowl with quinoa, local veggies and a choice of local fish, chicken or tofu. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  $35 per adult; $15 per child 5 to 12.

Or, feast on a super-fresh pan roasted halibut at True Food Kitchen (7007 Friars Road. 619.810.2929 or for $24, in addition to the normal a la carte menu. They’re also selling gift cards for mom enclosed in “seed” paper which can be planted and grown into basil. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For the Kodak-Moment Mom

Marina Kitchen (333 West Harbor Drive. 619.6999.8222) will provide complimentary family portraits during their four-course buffet brunch, available to download the next day. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. $38 per adult; $13 per child 12 and under.

More photo-opps are inevitable at all the seaside brunch spots, like Brockton Villa (1235 Coast Blvd., La Jolla. 858.454.7393 or Their “Queen Bee Special” brunch menu boasts pulled pork and soy chorizo chilaquiles or basil pesto summer vegetable pappardelle. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. $25 per adult; $12 per child 12 and under.

For the Drink-Loving Lady

Buy mom a craft beer at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens (1999 Citracado Parkway. 760.294.7866 or which will also offer a brunch menu served a la carte or a live omelet station including  fruit, potatoes, bacon and strawberry pastries. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If she’s more of a oenophile, treat the queen to a Mother’s Day brunch at Wilson Creek Winery (35960 Rancho California Rd., Temecula. 951.699.9463 or accented by live music and unlimited champagne. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. $49.95 per adult; $59.95 with unlimited champagne; $12.95 per child under 12.

Downtown at Searsucker(611 Fifth Ave. 619.233.7327 or, moms will squeal for free mimosas. In addition to the regular brunch menu served a la carte, a new smoked salmon benedict will be featured with asparagus, poached eggs and caviar béarnaise for $15. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Champagne-loving mama? Islands Sushi & PuPu Bar (2270 Hotel Circle North. 619.297.1101 or is hosting an extravagant champagne brunch buffet with breakfast foods, seafood, salads, pastas and entrees consisting of grilled mahi mahi topped with tequila lime sauce, braised lamb leg stew in spicy cilantro sauce, grilled chicken breast in a mango cream sauce and of course, plenty of chilled bubbly. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. $39.95 per adult; $37.95 per senior; $19.95 per child 6 to 12; free for 5 and under.   

Roppongi Restaurant(875 Prospect St., La Jolla. 858.551.5252 or spoils mom with bottomless mimosas and a complimentary SVEDKA cocktail to sip with the a la carte brunch menu featuring duck confit hash, smoked salmon and apple-kale salad and whole wheat French toast filled with apple-ginger butter. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Or, get the party started early with theMom’s Nite Out Chocolate and Wine Pairing on Thursday, May 9. This special event will feature wine and chocolate from Chuao and Constellation, appetizers, mini spa treatments and live musical entertainment. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. $35 per mom.

Sammy’s Pizza(multiple locations, will celebrate mom with specialty brunch pizzas and bottomless mimosas. Plus, she’ll be treated to a complimentary glass of champagne. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For the Trend-Setting Mom

She’s all about being seen, on the scene. L’Auberge Del Mar (1540 Camino Del Mar. 858.793.6460 or hosts brunch on the Waterfall Terrace complete with finger sandwiches, made-to-order omelets and garden fresh juices. Mom will also receive a special take-home gift of a recipe and jar of chef’s spring jam. 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. $85 per person; $25 per child 11 and under.

For the International-Adventurer Mom

From marinated Spanish olives to jamon serrano eggs benedict, chicken ajillo and grilled vegetable paella, the buffet is a true taste of Spain. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. $35.95 per person.  

For the Fuss-Free Mom

Food items include whiskey peach Dutch pancakes, brioche egg in a hole, biscuits and gravy and then some. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For a Dinner-Hungry Mom

Gabardine (1005 Rosecrans Street. 619.398.9810 or will host a Mother’s Day dinner featuring a specialty surf and turf menu item with heirloom carrots and potato gratin for $45. Surprise mom with the unforgettable gift of a $10 love blossom while you’re there.
