Pop Culture Costumes

Bored of predictable Halloween costumes? Lend your lame super hero ensemble to a friend, and instead opt for a pop culture-inspired look.

Anastasia Steele & Christian Grey

Women of all ages read the “Fifty Shades of Grey” fantasy series this summer, whether they’ll admit it or not. Author E.L. James made the classic romance novel new again with a bold dose of bondage. When the young, eager protagonist Anastasia Steel meets the mysterious businessman Christian Grey, a modern love story explores dominance and sexual awakening. What man wouldn't want to be Grey for a day?

The ultimate couple’s Halloween costume is Steele and Grey. Ladies, wear the symbolic plum-colored dress accessorized with metal handcuffs, a grey tie around your neck and the “Fifty Shades” paperback in your hand. Wear your brown hair down, or pick up a chestnut wig. Gentlemen, honor Grey in a charcoal tailored suit. Dye your hair dark copper, insert grey contact lenses and whisper “Laters, baby” for the full effect.

Honey Boo Boo Child

The only thing scarier than Honey Boo Boo Child is a mature adult willingly dressed up in pint-sized pageant attire. And that is the perfect reason to channel the 7-year-old reality TV star for Halloween. We have a feeling both men and women will ‘redneckognize’ the pop culture phenomenon this year.

To become Honey Boo Boo, start with a pink pageant dress, complete with a diamond tiara. Wear a curly blonde bob wig, and smother on a full face of stage makeup. To stand out from the rest, bring a box of go-go juice and carry a stuffed animal version of her pet pig, Glitzy.

Psy: "Gangham Style"

South Korean rapper Psy became one of this year’s biggest YouTube sensations when the “Gangham Style” video captivated audiences across the globe, generating endless parodies and earning him a spot on the MTV Video Music Awards stage. It looks like this overnight internet star is here to stay; Psy was signed by Justin Bieber’s manager, and a new single is coming soon.

Create your own “Gangham Style” parody this Halloween by dressing up as Psy. The K-pop artist’s signature look is a classic baby blue tuxedo jacket with navy trim and black tuxedo pants, worn with a ruffled white dress shirt, black bow tie and trendy black-rimmed sunglasses. Really impress your friends by sneaking a wardrobe change to reflect different scenes from the viral video. Oh, and don’t forget your script: “Hey, Sexy Lady!”

The ‘Fab Five’

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team dominated the 2012 London games in August, bringing gold back to the red, white and blue for the first time in 16 years. The ‘Fab Five’ dream team consists of Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, Jordyn Weber, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross. Though fierce competitors, these young ladies know how to have a good time, and rocked a whirlwind media blitz with style and sass.

Recreate the Olympic triumph with four friends this Halloween. The costume is simple; you’ll need five identical long-sleeved red leotards. Add shimmer detailing and an Adidas logo for good measure. Pull your hair back in a tight bun or ponytail, and load on the sparkling eye shadow. The most important accessory is a gold medal wrapped around your neck with pride. If you’re Maroney, keep that ‘not impressed’ look on your face all night. Be prepared to show off a few choreographed moves.

Magic Mike Strippers

One of the most popular summer movies among women was Magic Mike, a comedy-drama about male entertainers starring Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello. Any group of smart, single men hoping to meet ladies on Halloween will dress up as Hollywood’s hunkiest strippers.

When it comes to Magic Mike, less is more. The movie offers many themed performances, from cowboys to firefighters, but you can’t go wrong with the iconic Chip N Dales-inspired look. Think: well-fitted suit, without the shirt. Your group should dress down in mismatched black pants, black skinny ties or bow-ties, and accent cuffs around the wrists. A real six-pack is a plus, and spray-painted abs are encouraged.
