A renowned R&B star and a local artist making moves on reality TV are celebrating birthdays at FLUXX.
Multi-platinum selling singer-songwriter Ginuwine is turning 42, while pop-soul artist Aquile who represents San Diego on season three of NBC’s “The Voice” will turn 25. Despite the age gap, Ginuwine and Aquile will both pop bottles and serenade the nightclub crowd on Friday, October 12.
Ginuwine rose to fame in the late 1990s through collaborations with Jodeci, Missy Elliott and Timbaland. His first single “Pony” catapulted him into the R&B spotlight where he stayed through the early 2000s alongside R. Kelly, Usher and Jagged Edge. More of Ginuwine’s popular tracks over the years include “Differences” and “In Those Jeans.”
Ginuwine is now working on a new group, with a fresh single and tour coming up. “Me and my brothers decided to form a group called T.G.T. -- Tyrese, Ginuwine and Tank. That’s right San Diego, that real R&B is back and with a vengeance. We just signed a deal with Atlantic Records and we’re expecting the 1st single by early spring.”
“We are also planning a tour called ‘The Shirts Off Tour,’” he said. “Ladies, the name speaks for itself. So we will definitely plan on bringing the tour to San Diego.”
San Diego-based singer-songwriter Aquile performed a smooth, confident rendition of Elton John’s "Your Song" during the “The Voice” blind auditions, and earned himself a spot on Team Xtina. Before making it on NBC’s hit show, Aquile was performing four nights a week at Prospect Bar & Grill in La Jolla and Oceanhouse in Oceanside, among other venues throughout San Diego County.
The Vista-born talent has big dreams for the future. “I’m trying to go worldwide. I want to be global,” he said. “Music is my number one love, and I want to do it full time, forever. I want to inspire as many people as possible to do what they love to do.”
Friday will mark Aquile’s second time performing at FLUXX, following a breast cancer awareness charity event last year. “I really love the club. I have a friend who does bottle service there,” he told us. “It’s going to be a continued celebration of the show. I encourage everyone to come out and say hi.”
Aquile, who has a mix of Usher, John Mayer and Ellie Goulding on his playlist right now, listened to Ginuwine’s music while growing up in Oceanside. “I am definitely a fan of his old music. It was a coincidence that we are both having birthdays at the club, but hopefully we will get to hang out.”
What about a Ginuwine and Aquile birthday duet on stage? “I will be coming thru and blessing the stage with 1 or 2 songs,” Ginuwine said, with no hint of a collaboration with the ‘Voice’ contestant. “Now what songs will I perform? Well you need to come and find out for yourself.”
Head to FLUXX Nightclub on Friday, Oct. 12 to celebrate the birthdays of Ginuwine and Aquile, featuring live R&B performances and DJs Brett Bodley and Slowhand. For more information, visit fluxxsd.com
