Although the competition will be fierce between the two football teams Thursday in the Poinsettia Bowl, a faceoff Tuesday between the universities’ marching bands will be done in the spirit of fun.
The annual Five Star Tours Poinsettia Bowl Gaslamp March at 6 p.m. Tuesday brings together the bands, their cheerleaders and mascots in a friendly community event that includes music, marching, cheers and just a wee bit of braggadocio. This year’s Poinsettia Bowl matchup is between The San Diego State University Aztecs and the Brigham Young University Cougars.
“The event is the perfect medium to bring the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl game experience to the downtown area for the entire community to enjoy,” said Jimmy Parker, Executive Director of the Gaslamp Quarter Association. “We are so proud to team up with the folks at the Poinsettia Bowl in bringing this unique, family-friendly experience to streets of the historic Gaslamp Quarter.”
The groups from each college will march down Fifth Avenue (one group coming from the north, the other from the south) performing holiday music. They will meet in the middle at Market Street for an exhibition of music, pageantry and cheers. And then afterward, they will each parade in the opposite direction from which they came, performing their favorite marching tunes.
San Diego State University’s Marching Aztecs and their mascot the Aztec Warrior will meet up with the BYU Marching Cougars band and their mascot, Cosmo the Cougar.
The free public event often draws several thousand spectators, including large cadres of cheering fans for each team.
“I can’t think of a better way to kick off the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl festivities than with this thrilling event,” said John Wertz, 2012 bowl president, about the Gaslamp March. “The high energy sounds of these two university marching bands will be spectacular.”
Thursday night’s game at Qualcomm Stadium is likely to be a little less genteel. The Aztecs finished their 2012 season with 9 wins and 3 losses, sharing the Mountain West league title with Fresno State. BYU finished its season with 7 wins and 5 losses.
