DJ Spotlight: Q&A with Mike White

Originally from England, DJ Mike White began his career in Las Vegas spinning at local nightclubs and bars.  Although he found a home in Sin City, he chose to move west to sunny San Diego to continue his dream of becoming a top DJ, actor and model.

In addition to holding multiple residencies in Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas, DJ Mike White has had the privilege of spinning with artists such as DJ A.M., Steve Aoki, and Grandmaster Flash. He notes his greatest professional achievement as opening for the Black Eyed Peas, Dave Matthews Band and LL Cool J.  He’s even appeared in a Budweiser commercial.

DJ Mike White currently holds residences at The Grand Del Mar, Flavor Del Mar, and Ra Sushi. Before you listen to his deep and soulful house music, hear how he got his start and why he loves San Diegans in our latest DJ Spotlight.

DiscoverSD: How and when did you begin producing music?

DJ Mike White: I started spinning in the mid 90's just by accident. At the time I was a VIP host/Promoter at Drais Las Vegas. My friend, who at the time was the DJ, had to go out of town for an emergency. So he just gave me his records and said, "...here ya go!" And at that moment... that's when the magic began!  I remember I was extremely nervous and sweating like I ran a marathon! But, somehow I pulled it off! And that's when the addiction for music and the gift of crowd pleasing just kicked in and came in full effect. I mean if you think about it... shaking-bums is what I do for a living, and I love it!

DSD: How do you classify your style of music?

DJ Mike White: Very sexy, yet eclectic. I spin Down-tempo, Funk, Soul, Hiphop, Triphop, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's to current, Ska, Reggae, Twostep, Dubstep, Drum & Bass, Electro, Deep, Vocal & Tribal house. I play anything that comes to mind after reading my crowd... You got to really READ your crowd! Which is why every single set that I play is so different, because the vibe is always different. It's what keeps me on my toes!

DSD: How does San Diego compare to other cities you have performed or lived in?

DJ Mike White: Really laid back out here which I love. San Diegans seem to be really open-minded, from what I can tell, because of the diversity of the demographics. So when it comes to music, it's open game. That's when my ninja senses kick in and just do what I see and feel from the crowd to then "play" with music.  I have spun in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, & Palm Springs. And yes, San Diego is my favorite!

DSD: What new projects are you working on in the coming year?

DJ Mike White: I’m working on collaborating with a violinist. I also plan on expanding my DJing repertoire throughout California (LA and San Francisco) , as well as upcoming projects lined up for Vegas. Big things coming up for Mike White this year! I am very thankful for that. All that hard work is finally paying off!

DSD: What are your hobbies and passions, outside the music industry?

DJ Mike White: Acting, skateboarding, wining and dining.

DSD: What have been your greatest professional achievements so far?

DJ Mike White: Hmmm, let's see...Opening for the Black Eyed Peas, Dave Matthews Band, De La Soul, LL Cool J, Sade, Sean Paul & Seal. Also, I have had the privilege to spin with DJ's A.M., Grandmaster Flash, Mark Ronson, Samantha Ronson, Steve Aoki and Thievery Corporation.

DSD: What is your favorite place to relax in San Diego?

DJ Mike White: I love taking the water taxi from downtown & escaping to beautiful Coronado with my gorgeous girl Yahrlen & my two lil' chihuahua’s  Dubi  & Clover for a day! Since I have moved out here from Las Vegas, I fell deeply in love with San Diego and its beautiful people! Thank you for your love and support San Diego!
