Rastafari: Reggae Sundays at Harrah's

If you come to be yourself original then let it shine, and if your friends are friends of love then all your friends are friends of mine…

With Memorial Day Weekend only a few days away, we locals know this means one thing and one thing only: summertime in San Diego is officially here. Wahoo! Pass the dutchie on the left hand side – it’s time to partaaay babaaay!

For as long as I can remember, the one thing I have always equated with summertime is sweet and soulful reggae monnnnnnnnnnnnn! Come on, can you blame me?! We live in a city where endless beach days and island-inspired jams go hand in hand. Don’t get me wrong, I love getting decked out in neon colored bikinis to go do the Party Rock at wild and reckless electro-fueled rooftop pool parties in Gaslamp just as much as any other Sunday Funday reveler, but sometimes I just need to mellow out with Bob, Bradley and Duddy B.

If you’re anything like me and are in search of a reprieve from the crazed, fist-pumping techno beats of downtown this summer then look no further than Harrah’s Rincon Casino & Resort

When you need to chill out and cool down, the glistening pool at Harrah’s offers a Vegas-like experience, minus the crowds, constant battle for chairs, and out of control crazies spraying magnums of Veuve all over the crowd. Whether you choose to claim a few chaise lounge chairs and soak in the rays or grab some bar bites off the patio grill and sip on signature cocktails in the sun, Harrah’s is the place to seek summertime refuge.

Roots, Rock, Reggae: Every Sunday from 2pm to 6pm during June, Harrah’s is hosting just the right entertainment to keep you relaxed and ready to party! The return of Reggae Sundays means that you’ll have the opportunity to relax by the pool with friends while sipping refreshing summer beverages and jamming to live local reggae bands. What’s not to love?

Reggae Sundays kick off on June 3 with singer/songwriter Lloyd Hemmings, whose soothing songs deliver a spiritually uplifting message and melodic call for social justice and unification. Following on June 10, Safety Orange, a local trio that has stayed true to the San Diego beach vibe, will play their rocking blend of rock, reggae, rap, punk and ska music; and on June 17, don’t miss Kingston 13 jamming live poolside. On June 24, San Diego’s very own Polynesian Underground will have their top island reggae bands headline; and on June 31, Steel the Band will serenade party-goers with their steel drum rhythms and Caribbean sounds.

Insider Tip: The Rhythm Nation has taken San Diego by storm! If you don't want to take the trek out to Rincon, head up to the Marriott Del Mar for Reggae Pool Parties at Arterra Lounge. Held every Friday from 6:30pm-9:30pm, this weekly summertime event features poolside entertainment of Project: Out of Bounds, resort-style seating, signature cocktails and a full menu.

If you’re like me and want to channel your inner Rastafari this summer, make your way north east and discover Harrah’s Rincon Casino & Resort. For more information about Reggae Sundays, please visit harrahsrincon.com.
