I consider myself a pretty athletic person. I’ve been actively engaged in some form of fitness my entire life. But despite my honorable workout habits, I’ve never, ever been a good runner. I breathe wrong. I get horrible side aches. I’m kind of like Phoebe Buffay from that classic “Friends” episode, except I’m typically not having as much fun while flailing my arms around.
While there are endless running-free workouts to try, it’s a simple truth that interval cardiovascular training is essential for maximum calorie burning. But that’s just my problem. I am well aware of this, but I still just can’t make myself do it on my own.
In April I vowed to make fitness my top priority, and I agreed to the Xtend Barre Summer Challenge. I hit the dancer-style studio four times a week, and saw instant results from head to toe. I can’t say enough about Xtend Barre classes, but at the end of the month, I felt myself craving some serious cardio. Everyone knows that when you are in need of a big kick in the ass, you give Barry a call. And so I did, and I haven’t stopped running since.
Next Up: I am knees deep in my new Barry’s Bootcamp Summer Fitness Challenge, and I can honestly say I haven’t felt this good about myself in a long time. Every time I leave a class, my entire body is drenched in sweat, I have no idea where I am or what just happened, and I am filled with an incredible energy that gives me strength to tackle the rest of my day. Surviving a workout that intense – especially at 6am – empowers me to confront every other obstacle with confidence and positivity. Because of the inspiring group enviornment, during just one 60-minute class, I run more than I've run on my own in months. It’s not pretty, but it works! During June I promise to attend at least four Barry’s Bootcamp classes per week while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Want to join me?

Work it Out: Described as “The Best Workout in the World”, Barry’s Bootcamp classes are one hour, and each class includes 25 to 30 minutes of interval cardiovascular routines on the treadmill, and 25-30 minutes of strength training using free weights and other equipment. The floor work focuses on a different major muscle group each day allowing clients to develop a targeted program, or to attend Monday - Friday for a well-balanced routine. Instructors will vary the workouts from two 30 minute segments one day to four 15 minute segments another and even multiple short segments moving the class from treadmill to the floor every 5 minutes. The idea is to continually “shock” the body as research demonstrates that it is the most effective way to improve your cardiovascular system, lose weight and build muscle.
Sweat in Style: A favorite Hollywood fitness secret of the stars, Barry’s Bootcamp offers one location in Hillcrest, enabling San Diegans to perfect their A-List look. In addition to the workout strategy, what I love most about Barry’s Bootcamp is the high-energy atmosphere. From the intriguing camouflage print walls to the mesmerizing floor to ceiling mirrors, dim red lighting, and booming house and hip hop beats, Barry’s Bootcamp feels nothing like a traditional gym. During every class, you are entranced in the moment, and nothing exists outside the double doors. Another of my personal favorite elements is that the daily schedule offers multiple classes throughout the morning, afternoon, and night. Unlike a boutique gym where only two classes may be offered at 6pm, Barry’s Bootcamp offers 10 classes most days, starting at 5am, with the last class at 8pm. The convenience is priceless. And if you don’t believe me, just ask a few of Barry’s Bootcamp loyal fans, including Kim Kardashian, Jessica Alba, and Jennifer Aniston.
