Tails from the Patch: New Garden Cocktails

Savvy San Diego chefs no longer look outside the local environment for fresh ingredients and flavor inspiration. From daytrips to local farms to weekend adventures through local farmer’s markets, it’s never been easier, or more fun, to live, shop, and eat sustainable.

The new San Diego foodie trend, however, takes sustainability to a whole new level. Many chefs are buying farm land, and growing organic produce on their own property. The gorgeous ripe tomatoes and fresh basil you see in full bloom in the garden below are now the same ingredients you enjoy in your dinner entrée in the restaurant above. On a smaller scale, The US Grant Hotel recently transformed their downtown rooftop terrace into an intimate farm setting, which now supports culinary operations at The Grant Grill. Ingredients from the quaint and stylish rooftop garden are now used for Mixologist Jeff Josenhans' summer cocktail menu, as well as Chef Chris Kurth's harvest tasting menu. Named Tails from the Patch, the new cocktail menu is inspired by the garden’s unique herbs and produce, and offers four delicious spirits that are perfect for summer in San Diego.

Tails from the Patch: My personal favorite, the Rooftop Garden Tour is a blend of Angelica Infused Tanqueray Sterling Vodka, Muddled Russian Taragon and Florence Fennel, and White Peach Puree. More new cocktails include the Cinnamon Basil Champagne Cobbler with Pierre Ferrand Cognac, Moet Chandon, Muddled Cinnamon Basil, Orange, and Orange Blossom Sugar; the Lemon Mint Mojito with 10 Cane Rum, Muddled Lemon Mint, Fresh Pressed Meyer Lemon, and Soda Seltzer Water; and the Super Seasonal Skinny with Caraway Infused Rye Whiskey, Anise Truvia Syrup, West Indies Orange Bitters, and Fresh Egg White. All Tails from the Patch cocktails are priced at $12, and are available at The Grant Grill starting Wednesday, June 15. Chef Chris Kurth's harvest tasting menu will be served later this summer.
