The landmark hotel on the corner of 6th and F in downtown San Diego, first known as the Maryland and most recently the Ivy, will again reinvent itself as the Andaz San Diego on February 1, 2010.
On January 11, Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced that Andaz San Diego will debut in the property known as Ivy Hotel. Hyatt Corporation, a subsidiary of Hyatt Hotels Corporation, will operate the new Andaz Hotel under a management agreement with property owner Kelly Capital.
What is Andaz? The Hyatt Hotels Corporation’s boutique brand launched in November 2007 with the flagship Andaz Liverpool Street in London, and has since opened additional locations in West Hollywood (January 2009) and Wall Street New York (January 2010). Global in scale yet local in perspective, the Andaz brand strives to reflect the personality of each hotel location, and creates natural living spaces where travelers can indulge in their own personal sense of comfort and style.
Andaz San Diego is slated to refresh the boutique hotel with friendly, uncomplicated service and a fun, relaxed vibe that reflects the local culture of the Gaslamp Quarter. Most importantly, San Diego locals and visitors will not lose their go-to lifestyle venues; Ivy Ultra Lounge and Wine Bar and Ivy Rooftop (pictured) will remain, while the downstairs club will now be referred to as Ivy Nightclub rather than Envy. What will happen to the Ivy's Quarter Kitchen restaurant has yet to be said.
With less than 30 days before the re-opening, don’t expect too many changes to this already stunning space. We hope for a seamless transition, and based on words from the Hyatt and Kelly Capital parties, it appears the venue evolution is positive and on the right track.
"We are pleased to team up with Hyatt to bring Andaz to San Diego,” said Michael Kelly, Chairman and CEO of Kelly Capital. “The momentum of this new and refreshing brand fits the hotel property and its reputation in the community. We are evolving to provide an even better experience for our guests and to increase the excitement around the hotel’s hot spots for nightlife, including Ivy Rooftop, Ivy Nightclub and Ivy Ultra Lounge and Wine Bar, while having the backing of the deep culture and experienced management teams of Hyatt.”
End of an Era: We are sad to say goodbye to the signature Ivy Hotel we’ve grown to love, but we’re excited to see what’s in store for this iconic space on 6th and F in downtown San Diego in the decade to come. San Diego, get ready to meet your newest downtown San Diego hotel: Andaz on February 1, 2010.
Fun Fact: The property originally opened as the Maryland Hotel in 1914 to host dignitaries for the Panama-California Exposition and, following extensive renovations, it was re-opened in May 2007 as the Ivy Hotel by owner Michael Kelly of Kelly Capital.
