Who doesn’t love a romantic getaway to the warm desert? No matter what time of year, Palm Springs always seems to captivate San Diego locals with promises of poolside cocktails and blazing sun followed by a trip to the spa and candlelit dinner with your special someone.
Although Palm Springs is just a two hour drive away, when you’re in the desert everything completely changes. Maybe it’s the heat or maybe it’s the scenic mountain landscape – but in the desert, your only priority is supreme relaxation.
The only problem is, the secret is out. Anyone who has been to Palm Springs resorts in recent months will confirm that the area is consistently jam packed with tourists. But a few weeks ago I learned a little trick – just outside Palm Springs is an area called Indian Wells which is home to an array of beautiful resorts and hotels, and has yet to be consumed by mass tourist traction.
Our choice for a romantic getaway is Miramonte Resort Spa in Indian Wells. Before you run off and book your weekend escape, take my word for it – you may need to call in sick and block off a whole week.
Hundreds of years ago, natives discovered a natural well in the California desert, and the water instantly inspired a region of rich agriculture as well as generations of travelers seeking relaxation and essential rejuvenation. And now, Indian Wells is home to another unique find. Boasting championship golf, two on-site restaurants, two outdoor pools with hot tubs and cabanas, a 24-hour fitness center, suites with private terraces and marble-appointed amenities, and a signature spa The Well that was rated No. 1 Resort Spa in North America by Conde Nast, this all-inclusive resort will keep you busy and blissfully serene for as long as you wish to stay. Trust me – I tested it out myself.
Discover a taste of the Miramonte Resort Spa experience
Miramonte is a contemporary Mediterranean estate that lies at the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains, offering all visitors truly majestic views of the picturesque desert landscape. The grounds mirror a Tuscan village with tiled villas and grand archways and fine-crafted stonework throughout 11 acres of bright bougainvillea, fragrant olive groves, and lush citrus, rose and herb gardens.
There are 215 guestrooms and suites that are reminiscent of luxury villas, most offering direct views of the mountains, resort’s gardens or pool. Deluxe amenities include private terrace, marble-appointed bathrooms, high-speed internet access, twice-daily maid service, and concierge service. Just outside the rooms is a variety of spacious grass lawns set-up with crocket games, volleyball nets or public hammocks for your relaxation pleasure, encouraging guests to interact together or couple off into their own space.
Grove Artistan Kitchen, the top restaurant at Miramonte, celebrates the foundation of the Indian Wells community, and uses local ingredients from the area’s rich agriculture for always fresh “farm to table” seasonal cuisine. The menu features organic produce, fresh herbs, local ranch raised meats and poultry, fresh Pacific seafood, house-made pastas, prime dry-aged meats and innovative vegetarian dishes. Complete with a diverse wine and cocktail list and views over the pool, Grove makes for an all-around delicious resort dining experience.
But of all the resort’s alluring amenities, the centerpiece of Miramonte is the award-winning luxury spa: The Well. The spa desires to be a place of renewal and inspiration, and that vision is reflected in the décor, showcasing a very intimate Tuscan-style setting with romantic architecture, Italian fountains, and tranquil piazzas. With outdoor and indoor treatment rooms, The Well offers a variety of spa services and wellness classes that incorporate therapeutic muds, wine extracts, pure essential oils, and refreshing waters.
Unique services include Watsu, bagno vino, (wine baths) and Vichy showers provided on tables built from 100-year-old Acacia cedar. Distinctive river benches in the saltwater pool allow you to relax in a shallow stream of water while lounging on a chaise sculpted from stone. Or, express your artistic side with the Pittura Festa (Painting Party). Bright-colored muds and clays are painted on body, face and hair - a fun experience for couples or group. A face massage follows while the muds cleanse and detoxify the body, soothing muscles and joints.
My dreams of poolside cocktails, spa indulgence and romantic fine dining all came true during my latest visit to Miramonte Resort Spa. Check out the un-tapped Indian Wells for your next romantic getaway from San Diego. For more details, reservations and directions please visit miramonteresort.com.
