People don’t generally think of San Diego as a hot spot for celeb watching, but our sleepy little beach town has hosted some of the best and brightest stars from around the country.
As a premier luxury hotel, we’ve had our fair share of celebs stay with us at Sé. Since opening in December 2008, we have hosted Ludacris, Kevin Dillon, Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Dave Navarro and Matthey Perry – just to name a few. As a result, our staff has become celebrity-spotting aficionados and has put together an insider’s list of the best places to play paparazzi in San Diego.
La Jolla, known as the jewel of San Diego, is ideal to spot celebrities with its gourmet restaurants, high-end boutiques and beautiful art galleries. To get a glimpse of a celeb, head to the legendary George’s at the Cove, where celebrities flock to enjoy fine dining with an unparalleled view. The staff at George’s has served everyone from Robert Downey Jr, Pharell, Ron Livingston, Pamela Anderson, and countless NFL players.
Another celebrity favorite is Encinitas. “The Flying Tomato,” Olympic snowboarder Sean White, pro skater Tony Hawk, and pro Surfer, Rob Machado call the city home and can often be seen frequenting the city’s quaint downtown and local beaches. While in North County, swing by popular Mexican restaurant, Las Olas. The burritos are so good that Kevin Bacon, Tiger Woods, Victoria’s Secret Model Miranda Kerr, Orlando Bloom, Jessica Biel and Pink are just some of the celebrities who’ve stopped by for a bite as they made their way through San Diego.
The Del Mar Racetrack has been hosting Hollywood’s hottest since its inception in 1937. Most recently seen betting the ponies are Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale, Bo Derek, Johnny Knoxville, Luke Wilson, Kevin Costner, Jessica Simpson, Uma Thurman, Mario Lopez, Audrina Patridge and Wilmer Valderrama. The best day to spot a celebrity is Opening Day, often called the biggest party on the West Coast.
While celebrities come to San Diego year-round, the best celebrity sightings occur at Comic Con. The event brings all the major names in Hollywood to San Diego for a weekend of panels, parties, and celebrity spotting galore. This year’s event brought Denzel Washington, the cast of Twilight, Cameron Diaz, Seth Green, Johnny Depp, Seth Rogen, Megan Fox, Rebecca Romijn, Hayden Panettiere and Rachel McAdams to San Diego.
Our beaches, attractions, and nightlife make San Diego a favorite getaway for Hollywood’s elite. Next time you are out and about, don’t forget your camera. You might just get the opportunity to meet and get a photo with your favorite celebrity.
