High Tech Facials: SD Medical Spas

Posted on 10/18/2010 By:Emily Pippin

Too scared to go under the knife and get a face lift? You’re in luck because there are lots of other options to help improve your skin’s complexion, plump fine lines and wrinkles, and stimulate collagen production without slicing required. Two San Diego medical spas, Laser Clinique and Ava Med Spa, both offer a variety of non-surgical alternatives to going under the knife. From medical grade peels to laser skin rejuvenation to photofacials, many medical spas offer lots of alternatives to turn back time.

Chemical Peels

A very popular procedure is a chemical peel. Chemical peels can reduce the appearance of fine lines on the face and provide a better-looking skin tone. There are different varieties and strengths of chemical peels ranging from light to deep.

During the procedure, a solution is applied to the skin that dissolves the upper layers. Nothing is actually “peeled off.” Because the upper layers have been dissolved, the body starts the healing process, which causes fresh, new tissue to grow and emerge (aka softer, youthful skin). An ointment is applied to the skin to help in the healing process.

Lots of rest and limited movement are imperative to speeding up the healing process. The ointment that is applied is covered with bandage dressing to minimize swelling. Pain can usually be managed with medication.

Laser Clinique offers a range of medical grade peels. These peels include a Glycolic peel, Modified Re Vitalize peel and TCA peel. Ava Med Spa offers both chemical peels and a variety of medical strength peels.

The VitalizePeel from Ava Med Spa is a great way to wake up your tired skin after a long night of partying. The peel, from the skincare brand SkinMedica, uses very mild acids to help smooth your complexion, help minimize the appearance of fine lines and create a younger looking complexion.

The medical grade peels remove dead skin, stimulate collagen and are completely non-invasive. There is very little, if any, recovery time needed after each procedure unlike with chemical peels. For the best results, Ava Med Spa recommends four to six treatments. After just one of these chemical peels, you’ll back on the dance floor looking your best in no time!

Photofacial and Photorejuevanation

Photorejuvenation can treat a variety of skin conditions including fine lines and wrinkles. And the good news for those of us who love to lie out in the sun and tan our skin is that photorejuvenation provides unparalleled results for treating and removing sun spots, redness and brown spots. Photorejuvenation also produces an even-looking skin tone which gives off a youthful appearance without removing any layers of the skin. You can have beautiful skin and keep that bronzed tan all year long. “Photorejuveation is a close second to Botox because we get a lot of sun exposure in Southern California which translates into sun damage overtime.  Photorejuvenation is an effective and affordable way to correct the sunspots, age spots and hyperpigmentation,” says Stanley.

Photofacial and photorejuvenation are done using non-laser Intense Pulse Light (IPL) technology. Collagen production is stimulated when the skins surface is penetrated by the amounts of light energy. New collagen formation softens the appearance of aging skin, helps fill in fine lines and wrinkles, and can even decrease redness associated with rosacea.

Laser Clinique uses the Lumenis One laser that is one of the safest lasers in the world. Treatments last between 15 to 30 minutes and are minimally, if at all, discomforting. About five treatments are needed and are usually scheduled every three weeks.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser Clinique offers laser resurfacing and the results are remarkable. Laser resurfacing helps with a number of different conditions including wrinkles, improving skin texture and stimulating collagen production.

The Fractional Laser is used to deliver a precise amount of light energy to the skin. Oils are cleaned off of the face and then a layer of ointment is applied to the face before the laser is applied. The beams of energy create columns of tissue coagulation without damaging the surrounding tissue. This process spurs the healing process that will form healthy tissue.

“The procedure that is the most popular for replacing a face lift is fractional laser resurfacing,” says Dr. Ataii of Laser Clinique. “It is the most popular because of the results. The procedure is very results driven. It not only tightens skin, but reduces the appearance of scars as well.”
