We're all guilty of overindulgence during the holiday season. This cookie-fueled trend explains why many locals have one of two resolutions come the dawn of every New Year: join a gym and finally get into fantastic shape.
With the plethora of generic gyms and upscale boutique studios in profusion throughout the greater San Diego area, we are left to wonder how to differentiate between the good, the bad and the waste of time. Fortunately, Lava Sport and Fitness, a high-energy full-service health club with five locations across San Diego, is here to help you drop the holiday weight and accomplish your fitness goals for the New Year.
For expert fitness advice, I sat down with Sean Piazza, Fitness Director at Lava's new Point Loma location at Liberty Station, for one-on-one training about New Year's resolutions and realistic goals.
Whether you are struggling to fit fitness into your busy work schedule, a new parent with baby weight to lose, or an in-shape gym regular stuck in a workout rut, take this expert advice from Sean Piazza to finally achieve your New Year's resolution in 2009.
Resolution 1: I haven't worked out regularly over the past three years due to an extremely busy work schedule. I've tried to get into a consistent regiment, but nothing seems to stick and I always feel too exhausted at the end of the work day. I want to make time for health this year and get into a dedicated fitness program.
Sean Piazza's Solution: Sounds like you're ready to make a commitment to your health - you just need a little help staying consistent and motivated. A majority of our clients are busy, corporate men and women working 60 to 70 hour weeks. For this reason we open our club at 5am and offer a variety of Group X classes like power boxing, kickboxing, yoga, gravity and indoor cycling every day starting at 5:30am. We also offer total-body 45-minute gravity classes over the lunch hour for professionals needing the most effective group workout in the shortest amount of time...

Resolution 2: I used to have time for fitness, but now that I have two toddlers running around, my sole means of working out is chasing them around. Since having my second child I've been unable to lose the baby weight. This year I want to lose twenty pounds, tone up and feel happy about the way my body looks again.
Sean Piazza's Solution: The most common excuse that mothers have for not working out is that they don't have anyone to watch their children. One of the great things we offer to our members is our Fit Kids Club, in partnership with San Diego Gymnastics. With the kids taken care of, you can focus on your weight loss goals. Pilates is a favorite amongst moms looking to tighten their tummies, tone up and create long lean muscles. As a member of Lava you have free access to all Pilates classes, and for a more personalized Pilates workout, where a certified instructor can work on your specific goals, we have an on-site private studio for one-on-one training...

Resolution 3: I've been working out regularly over the past year, but I feel like I'm stuck in a rut. My regular workout routine of cardio and strength training used to work, but now I'm bored of it and feel like I am no longer pushing myself. This year I want to find a new regiment to get me into the best shape of my life.
Sean Piazza's Solution: I get this comment a lot, and I always tell people how important it is to mix up your workout routines to keep your body guessing and your mind stimulated. I always encourage people who feel stuck and uninspired to dive into our Power Boxing and/or Power Kickboxing classes because they offer a fantastic high-impact cardio workout. What is unique about these classes is that each of our boxing/kickboxing instructors run drills in entirely different ways, so your body is constantly challenged...
