Hard-working women (and men) deserve a mani/pedi, facial and massage after a long week. Just one problem: if you want these San Diego day spa luxuries, you can kiss your rent and grocery money goodbye.
Fortunately, About U Day Spa in North Park offers high-quality spa services that do less damage to your debit card.
“The idea of the North Park spa location is to have a ‘neighborhood niche’ spa,” says spa co-owner Maureen Gray. “We want it to be a place where locals can come for manicures, pedicures and waxing on a weekly basis because it’s affordable.”
The first About U Day Spa opened in Miramar a year and a half ago by the Charlie’s Angel trio, Susan Cologna, Maureen Grey and Tina Ngo. Harnessing the power of creativity, business and brains, these women run a San Diego beauty spa that boasts spa services to pamper even the most Paris Hiltonesque. But what sets About U Day Spa apart: it provides spa services for the average girl, too.
In addition to a full nail salon and hair salon, About U Day Spa offers facials, massages, permanent make-up, microdermabrasion, and body wraps like any high-class spa in La Jolla or Downtown San Diego. About U’s big difference? The price. A full body wrap that lasts two hours might run you $250 at an upscale San Diego spa. At About U Day Spa, it’s just $110. Still too much for your bank account? A full body steam provides complete relaxation for $25 and a classic pedicure is only $18.
“ Everyone deserves to have these treatments,” Gray says. “ Our practitioners are just as good as those at any other spa.”
The artistic, quaint neighborhood of North Park has recently undergone many renovations, making it the perfect spot for the new About U Day Spa. However, rents are still low – one way About U is able to keep prices down. The Miramar location is 1300 square feet, while the new North Park spa is 1500 square feet with four quaint rooms and three pedicure chairs.
Sure there’s no ocean view at About U Day Spa, but that doesn’t mean one can’t enjoy a seaweed wrap, which includes a seaweed infused scrub, massage, and a warm sheet wrap for detoxification – only $30 for 25 minutes. Another popular exfoliation is the peppermint/rosemary scrub, which revitalizes the body and awakens the senses. To enhance relaxation, About U’s customers enjoy complimentary glasses of wine. The spa also offers makeover packages for brides-to-be and their wedding parties with make-up, hair and nail services.
My Experience at About U Day Spa
A facial from About U Day Spa is a big step up from the apricot scrub and two slices of cucumber that I typically like to call ‘pampering’ myself. If your skin is more oily than the parking lot of a truck stop (like mine) then you’ll want to try About U Day Spa’s Derma Flash Peel with Firm and Lift and Microdermabrasion.
The facial began with an examination of my skin followed by a deep heat exfoliation peel and a lift mask. The sensation may burn at first but then tingles with a cooling sensation. (Not to worry, this chemical peel will not have the effects it did on Samantha from Sex and the City—no harsh chemicals here). The microdermabrasion tool that the spa uses has fine crystals, feeling like a light pumice stone spun gently across my face. After the mask was removed, a botanical cellular recovery serum was applied. In addition to a facial, the technician gave me a back massage with a fruit-smelling scrub as well as a deep neck massage with owl’s balm.
Needless to say, after the facial, I was ready for my nap!
