Blue the Salon is located in the beautiful Bird Rock neighborhood of La Jolla.

For the past four years, Blue the Salon has provided consistently outstanding hair care for San Diego. And due to their professional service and one-of-a-kind atmosphere, DiscoverSD.com decided it's about time we stop being selfish and share them with you.
In an exclusive interview with salon manager, Emily, and salon owner, Tom Leach, we got all the details on Blue style.

Q: How did Blue come to be?

Tom: I had been working in Detroit in the film industry and salon industry. And many of my colleagues and I started up in California in Beverly Hills, where we opened our original salon location. Four years ago my wife, Elaine, and I wanted to move cities, and decided San Diego was the perfect location. We wouldn't be sucking up smoke anymore and we'd be right by the water.

Q: What kinds of salon treatments and styles do you offer?

Emily: Our main focus is hair. But we do makeup if our clients are planning to go out on a given night and want their hair and make-up done. We also do makeup for special occasions, like weddings in San Diego. We offer salon specials like deep conditioning and hair shine treatments. Everything at Blue is all about the hair.

Q: What brands do you use?

Emily: We sell all Kerastase products and use the L'oreal hair care line.

Q: How would you describe the atmosphere at Blue?

Tom: Comfortable but not too comfortable. We want Blue to be a very classic salon in San Diego. We try to create a mature, relaxing place where kids aren't running around and clients can really have a nice time.

Emily: The gold mirrors and the blue walls, wood tables and low lighting create an antique feel. We aren't about the all-steel look; we want our salon to be inviting and homey. We don't want it to be completely contemporary or modern, Blue is more of a classic San Diego salon.

Q: What would you describe your staff?

Emily: If you want to be a hair stylist at Blue, there are certain things you must do. First of all, you have to be in our assistant program before you become a stylist. We look for people who are motivated and are always trying to improve their techniques. We hire well-rounded people that are upbeat and friendly.

Tom: We like the diverse group of stylists we have at Blue because everyone is strong, yet everyone excels in different areas. One person might be a great colorist and one might be an awesome short hair stylist. Everyone that works here has a lot to offer.

Q: Who will we find at Blue the Salon?

Emily: Our clientele is about 50/50 male to female. We have a lot of regular clients that have been with us for years.

Tom: Some come from as far away as Orange County and LA. Some people even fly in to come here. It's similar to how you never date the people at your school. The salon that's in your neighborhood isn't always the one you want to go to.

Q: What will we hear at Blue the Salon?

Emily: We tend to play music to match Tom's mood. We play a lot of 80's and rock music. Dance music keeps the day upbeat and mellow music closes the evening.

Q: How to your prices compare to other salons in San Diego?

Emily: Prices at Blue vary. Women's haircuts are between $65-$120 and men's range from $35 to $42. Full coloring is $95 and highlights range from $95-$125.

Blue the Salon isn't just a unique San Diego salon, it's a classic escape from your hectic life. Next time you are due for a haircut, be sure to consider Blue the Salon in the Bird Rock, La Jolla.
