Oceanside: The Last Beach Bargain in San Diego?
Published : 08/17/2006 by Angela Generoso
Is Oceanside the last coastal city in San Diego to offer affordable housing? Many potential investors would say yes. Luckily, this North County San Diego beach city has a lot more to offer prospective homeowners than what meets the eye. Located just 35 miles north of San Diego and 83 miles south of Los Angeles, Oceanside is right between Carlsbad and Camp Pendelton, the largest marine base in the United States.
Since Oceanside housing is quite affordable, it has attracted many people from the retired community who enjoy the large number of adult communities and mobile home parks. Ocean Hills is an example of such a senior neighborhood, offering golf and other quiet activities in a gated environment. Downtown Oceanside is a thriving community of shops, hotels, services and other fun tourist activities. Plus, the city is located just four miles of the historic San Luis Rey Mission.
Anything from condominiums to small cottages to beautiful large homes is available in Oceanside at a comparably low cost. New homes are also being built, rapidly changing Oceanside into a more upper-class community. Just a few miles east, the city primarily consists of older homes from the 1960s, bringing forth the popularity of suburban neighborhoods. Statistically, the median price of a home in Oceanside is just two-thirds of one in Carlsbad or Encinitas.
As the 21st century comes into full swing, it seems as though affordable housing has almost diminished throughout San Diego’s many beach communities. Being the northernmost beach city in San Diego, this quiet surfing community continues to grow, making affordable housing to soon be a story of the past, and budget conscious prospective homeowners will soon need to move even farther east to find a home within their means.
Interested? You should be. With an average high of 70 degrees annually, this 42-square-mile city has not only one of the most exciting piers throughout coastal California, but also a tight-knit surfing community as well. Oceanside offers excitement, nightlife, and awesome coastal weather as well. It’s definitely a hot place to live!
