After much planning and several failed site attempts, a location has finally been secured to house a much needed parking structure at Grossmont Community College in the San Diego community of El Cajon. Lot five, located on the east side of the campus, has been under construction since October, 2007.

Over 18,000 students attend Grossmont College, in addition to the 800+ faculty and staff members, and needless to say, parking can be a challenge. As one of San Diego's largest and most flourishing community campuses, Grossmont must continue to meet the needs of its ever growing popularity.

Features on the campus range from a multi million dollar state-of-the-art technology mall, complete with two levels of resources, computer and internet access, as well as study areas and a testing facility. Grossmont College is miles from where it began over 40 years ago. Serving a very diverse population of students in age, ethnicity, and origin, El Cajon's Grossmont College has become a destination for many students across the globe.

The structure will actually begin to be built in February of 2008 creating an even larger parking challenge during construction with a loss of over 800 spaces through the end of the Fall 2008 semester. Projected to be completed for the Spring 2009 semester, the structure will consists of 1,431 permanent parking spaces for the student body. Until the completion date parking will continue to be an issue on campus. In order to ensure a spot for you ride on campus we recommend a few simple and easy tips:

- Arrive at the perfect time Classes are traditionally scheduled 15 minutes apart, so arrive 20 minutes before your class to catch all the students who are leaving when you are arriving.

- Call your friends Do you know someone who is on their way out when you are on you way in? Call or text them in advance to see where they parked and head over to snag their spot before someone else beats you to it!

- Ask "Are you leaving?" - So, it's a little awkward talking to people you don't know, but ask someone if they are leaving before you parking lot "stalk" them all the way to their car only to find they are not leaving or someone else beat you to their car.

In the grand scheme this new structure will easy much of the tension that students endure parking, but until then give yourself enough time to get where you need to go. Leaving more time for parking will allow you to minimize your school stresses to the areas that will benefit you most, like overwhelming homework and quirky professors.
