San Diego Dating: Text or Call?
Published : 02/18/2008 by Loxie Gant
To text or to call? That is the question. In the world of courtship, the advent of modern technology has made it easier than ever for men to begin relationships. The use of text messages has provided another option by which to flirt, communicate, and even ask someone on a date.
The problem arises when deciding which form of contact is the most appropriate to use for your situation. As of yet, there are no laid out social rules to help San Diego singles navigate this new technology, especially when it comes to dating. Thankfully, the San Diego Dating Guru is here to provide you with foolproof guidelines to help you use technology only to your advantage while dating in San Diego.
Because texting has become an easy way to maintain a continuous conversation, it is often seen as a scapegoat from actual conversation. The unstated interpretation with calling entails that you are actually devoting all your attention to a conversation with the other person. Because of this, a call holds more weight than a text.
When asking someone on a date, calling is the most appropriate choice. Although it may seem less risky to ask someone on a first date by text message, it does show a lack of confidence and your fear of direct rejection. Putting yourself out there is tough, but if you do it - do it well. In the same respect, if you are canceling a date, texting is never appropriate. A personal phone call is required. No exceptions.
Despite the modern acceptance of cell phones in daily life, never use your phone while on a date in San Diego. Answering the phone or responding to text messages is disrespectful. It gives your date the idea that your focus is not on them, or even that you would rather be somewhere else. If you must return a call or text, excuse yourself to go to the restroom and take care of it away from the table.
That "3 Day Rule" of waiting three days to call is so 1999. Thanks to text messaging, a post-date "I had a really nice time and I will call you later this week" text is totally acceptable.
When having a text conversation, one common question is:
How much is too much?
As a rule of thumb, keep the texting at a 1 to 1 ratio. For every message you send, you should get one back. Do not inundate their phone with every random thought that comes into your head. Keep it short and simple.
If you are "text flirting," it can be really easy to be too forward or to have your message misinterpreted. Make sure to proofread your messages before you send them, to ensure you are saying exactly what you want to say. In the same respect, if a lover's quarrel breaks out via text, cool down and call them. Texting leaves too much room for error.
Ultimately, when in doubt, a phone call is always the best option when dating or single in San Diego.
