Heads up to all local Daddios and Kitty Cats.
The Corvette Diner, San Diego's original rock-n-roll joint with 1950s décor, classic diner dishes, and gum-smacking, bouffant-haired waitresses has pulled up its 22 year-old Hillcrest roots and cruised to new digs in Historic Liberty Station.
Opened on June 22, the Diner is now located off Rosecrans near Point Loma and is twice as large as the original Hillcrest location; occupying 13,000 sq.ft. and seating up to 300 guests.
In addition, the new location can boast something that the rest of downtown spoons can't live up to: abundant parking is everywhere (1,000 parking spots!) and it’s free. Also coming along for the ride is the new Gamers Garage: Corvette Diner’s new arcade, spanning over 5,500 sq.ft. and featuring more than 50 games and two private dining rooms for parties and events.
Features of the new Diner include themed eating areas, such as a 1950s room with deep booths and window-like TV's screening videos of Elvis and teenage-loving Jerry Lee Lewis, and a ‘60s inspired hazy room with glowing tables, black lights and fluorescent posters of leather-clad Gods (e.g. Jimi Hendrix) on the ceiling. The new Diner also houses a full bar for adults (using only premium liquor in the well), a soda-fountain and DJ booth. Executive Chef Daniel Diaz has added several new items to the menu, including a large selection of salads, sandwiches, and wine, but still maintains the classics, including deep-fried pickles. Look for movie night and BINGO coming this fall.
On July 11 and 12, the Corvette Diner's Grand Opening Celebration will host the First Annual Corvette Diner & Gamers Garage Summer Bash: a free, two-day celebration open to the public. The Bash will showcase more than 100 Corvettes courtesy of the Corvette Owners Club of San Diego, and host live musical performances by the ShamRockers, Lady Dottie & the Diamonds, and Beatles tribute-band HELP.
Since 1987, The Corvette Diner has remained a local and tourist favorite. Founded by David and Lesley Cohn, the success of this first endeavor produced a chain of restaurants (Cohn Restaurant Group) that have come to define San Diego's finest culinary destinations: The Prado, Kemo Sabe, Dakota Grill, Blue Point, Mister Tiki, Indigo Grill, Thee Bungalow, 333 Pacific, Gaslamp Strip Club, Island Prime, and Pineapple Grill located in Kapalua, Maui.
Cohn Restaurant rep Michelle Kveen is excited about the Diner’s new move and continuing the restaurant’s hip tradition. “The servers are all still in ‘50s character with names to pair their alter personalities. Ask to sit in Richie or Joanie Cunningham's section, and be served by Hazel, Gertie, Mabel, Frankie or Dewey. The DJ’s play music that makes you want to tap your foot at the very least. Some guests sing, and some can't help but to dance in the aisles!”
“The Corvette Diner is and will always be sassy. Urban Dictionary defines sassy as ‘possessing an ungodly amount of cool.’ Well, that's what we got!”
Thanks, Michelle. We can dig it.
