LUX Art Institute – Encinitas
Nestled on the hillside of a four-acre parcel overlooking the San Elijo Lagoon and surrounded by a wildlife preserve that stretches two miles to the Pacific Ocean, LUX Art Institute is the perfect backdrop for artistic exploration. At LUX you don't just see finished works of art; you see the artistic process firsthand, engaging with internationally recognized artists in a working studio environment. The institute was founded on a unique and integrative concept in that it combines a residence, studio and exhibition format in order to offer residents a flexible space to work during their stay and allow visitors to see artists at work in the studio. Once a month, LUX hosts the Wednesday night event "LUX at Night." From 7 to 9pm, join with friends for a free evening of art, wine, music and the opportunity to meet the current artist-in-residence and view the exhibit. Got a little Picasso on your hands? Once a month, LUX hosts "Kids at LUX," a Saturday afternoon event that features a guided tour through the studio, a Q&A session with the artist-in-residence and a hands-on art project.

Museum of Contemporary Art – Downtown
Located in the Jacobs and Copley buildings, MCASD is a museum that provides public access to contemporary art, artists, and the creative process. At MCASD, guests have the opportunity to experience and explore the presentation of modern art dating from the 1950s to the present day. Past exhibitions have included "Octagon: Photographs by Kevin Lynch," a series of photographs which documented the Ultimate Fighting Championship both ringside and behind the scenes, and Jane Hammond's "Fallen," which featured a large field of colorful handmade leaves each inscribed with the name of a U.S. solider killed in the war in Iraq. To top it off, if you're under 25-years-old, you should give Qualcomm a whopping high-five because you get in for free. Once a month during spring and summer seasons, MCASD hosts “Thursday Night Thing” – a cultural celebration with artist talks, live music, exhibit tours, and art-making activities. In addition, MCASD offers free admission from 5 – 7pm on the third Thursday of each month. There is a second location of MCASD in La Jolla.

Mingei International Museum – Balboa Park
Located in the heart of Balboa Park on the Plaza de Panama, Mingei International Museum boasts six spacious galleries featuring dynamic, changing exhibitions of folk art, craft and design from all eras and cultures around the globe. Mingei, meaning "art of the people," showcases the finest examples of creative expression from unknown craftsmen to renowned contemporary designers. Past exhibitions at Mingei have included "Hungarian Folk Magic," "American Viewing Stones," and "Symbols of Identity" – an exhibition composed of adornment from cultures across five continents. In addition to the stunning collection of artwork on display, Mingei also houses a multimedia education center, theater, visitor kiosks for collection overview, an Art Reference Library, and the Collector's Gallery museum store.

Museum of Photographic Arts – Balboa Park
MoPA has been devoted to collecting, conserving and exhibiting the entire spectrum of the photographic medium since its founding in 1983. Home to more than 4,000 works, MoPA's exhibitions and public programs consistently strive to address cultural, historical and social issues by educating and engaging the audience through photography, film and video. Over the years, MoPA has displayed a wide array of brilliant work from prominent photographers ranging from Ansel Adams and Edward Steichen to Nancy Newhall and Lou Stoumen, alongside compelling exhibitions such as Jo Whaley's "Theater of Insects" and "Landscape Through Time and Space" – an education-based exhibit exploring ideas and issues related to the landscape. The museum is also home to a state-of-the-art movie theater which hosts classic flicks and film series tributes throughout the year. During select months throughout the year, MoPA hosts “POP Thursdays” – a museum party that blends the best of film, music and cocktails while engaging a younger audience.

Reuben H. Fleet Science Center – Balboa Park
The Fleet Science Center's seven galleries of scientific phenomena promoting "hands-on" and "do touch" exhibits provide a unique self-guided learning experience for individuals of all ages. The Fleet features more than 100 interactive displays and currently houses 10 permanent exhibitions where visitors can learn how to generate electricity, explore symmetry in time, design images with a sand pendulum, and examine the vibration of guitar strings. The Reuben H. Fleet Center is also home to Southern California's only IMAX Dome Theater where films take audiences everywhere from outer space to under water. After you've experienced all the exciting exhibits the Fleet has to offer, head over to the 23-passenger simulator ride to enjoy a thrilling journey into unknown realms.

Oceanside Museum of Art – Oceanside
A cultural jewel located in downtown Oceanside, OMA presents provocative, contemporary exhibitions from regional and international artists. OMA does not have a permanent collection on display, it instead hosts three traveling or temporary exhibitions that run for 3 to 4 months at a time. From classic landscape paintings and studio furniture to neon sculpture, art quilts and architectural glass, the museums' galleries are redesigned for each exhibit, surprising visitors with a fresh, exciting visual transformation during every show. OMA also offers art instruction at the OMA School of Art, in addition to "Free Family Days" where children are encouraged to view the artwork and participate in hands-on art activities, and "Art After Dark" – a social event where young professionals can enjoy a cocktail and mingle with friends.

Timken Museum of Art – Balboa Park
Located in beautiful Balboa Park, Timken Museum of Art houses the world-class Putnam Foundation Collection of European old masters American art and Russian icons, and is considered one of the great small museums in the world. The collections range from 13th-century altarpieces to 18th-century portraits, and 19th-century still life masterpieces by renowned artists including Rembrandt, Rubens, Fragonard, Bierstadt and John Singleton Copley. In addition to the array of artwork, Timken also hosts "Art in the Afternoon" – a popular series of afternoon gallery talks, and "Art in the Evening" – a series of special evening lectures that feature prominent art historians, scholars and art connoisseurs from around the world. San Diego Air & Space Museum – Balboa Park
Unfold the elaborate and remarkable history of aviation right in your own backyard at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. The exhibit tour whirls you through the history of flight, beginning with the first step into the Theodore Gildred Flight Rotunda where visitors are greeted by the Apollo 9 Command Module and Sopwith Pup Reproduction. As you fly backwards through time you will find yourself surrounded by an array of historic aircraft and spacecraft from such prominent world-wide aviation eras as the Golden Age of Flight, WWI & WWII, the Pavilion of Flight and the Jet Age. And if you've ever wondered what it might be like to fly high in the sky, SDAM has two aerial treats for your enjoyment. If you want the excitement of a realistic ride over San Diego, the Flight Simulator is a fun attraction for all ages and skill levels, allowing visitors to experience what it feels like to fly aboard the Piper Club. For those who are looking for a little more action, the Max-Flight Simulator Ride lets guests be pilot or gunner (or both) as they engage in interactive dog fighting, carrier landings, flight training and aerobatic maneuvers.

San Diego Museum of Art – Balboa Park
Boasting the largest collection of all museums in Balboa Park, SDMA has been providing locals and visitors with treasured fine art for 75 years. SDMA showcases continually changing exhibits as well as an array of renowned artwork in four permanent exhibitions. The American Art collection houses paintings from artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Diego Rivera whereas works from Goya and El Greco can be found in the European Art collection. The Asian Art collection includes a selection of objects from China, Japan, Korea and South Asia, and the Contemporary Art collection which features acclaimed artists such as Joan Miro and Salvador Dali has been an integral part of the museum's history since the beginning. In addition to the diverse selection of fine art exhibitions, SDMA also hosts a variety of ongoing special events such as “Culture & Cocktails.” This popular sundown series invites guests to mingle with new and old friends, dance to the rhythm of the DJ's spinning beats and throw back a few freshly-made cocktails while enjoying artwork in a whole new light.

San Diego Natural History Museum – Balboa Park
If the Discovery and History channels are your go-to guide, then San Diego's Natural History Museum will have you captivated for hours. Founded by a handful of citizen-naturalists in 1874, the museum is an active research institution and is the second oldest scientific institution in Southern California. The museum is dedicated to interpreting the natural world through research and education, and offers local and international exhibitions that promote an understanding of the evolution and diversity of the Southern California and Baja California regions.
