Del Mar is one of the most admired coastal neighborhoods in San Diego. With fine dining restaurants, upscale boutique shopping, and spotless parks and beaches amid picturesque sunsets and divine ocean breezes, the Del Mar community truly thrives in San Diego standards.

Ever wonder how Del Mar remains so vibrant and orderly despite the hordes of tourists and shoppers filling the ocean-side streets?

Discover the Del Mar Village Association (DMVA), an organization made up of Del Mar residents, business owners, and property owners, founded on the vision to enhance the vitality of the Village of Del Mar while preserving its history and unique character.

In addition to outstanding everyday work in the community, the DMVA hosts an array of special events year-round, such as Summer Solstice in June, Summer Beach Festival in August, Taste of Del Mar and Art Stroll and Halloween in the Village, both in October, and Holiday Wonderland in December.

In anticipation of the 2nd annual Holiday Wonderland event, we went behind the scenes with the DMVA to get all the insider details on this December's Main Street event.

Q: How do you create a successful event in San Diego? How did the Del Mar Village Association find success in San Diego?

A: It takes a number of dedicated and committed individuals, merchants, and businesses to create a successful event such as Holiday Wonderland in Del Mar. We have a number of incredible volunteers who work tirelessly side by side, and the effort shows.

Each year our events have grown, not just in numbers, but more importantly, in involvement by our Del Mar community members as well as friends and family. We measure our success in knowing that we have created a unique event that captures the essence of the heart of Del Mar.

Q: What is going to make Holiday Wonderland the best community event this holiday season in San Diego?

A: What makes Holiday Wonderland in Del Mar the best holiday community event is we offer a variety and number of activities in a beautiful setting, just steps away from the ocean. With the historic charm only offered in Del Mar, no other event presents such a picturesque, holiday backdrop.

The magic of the season comes alive with the day's events, including: horse and carriage rides, strolling carolers, a visit from Santa and the Grinch, tastes from Del Mar restaurants, arts and crafts activities, a BMX stunt riding exhibition, a rock climbing wall, a holiday gift bazaar with a number of vendors providing unique gift items, dance and theater presentations, train rides, an obstacle course, a collection site for Toys for Tots, and much, much more.

Q: What is your favorite element of this event?

A: The historic charm coupled with the ongoing family entertainment, restaurant tastes, arts and crafts, kid fun zone, and holiday gift bazaar can't help but put you in the spirit of the holidays. The winter holiday season is truly my favorite time of year.

Q: What San Diego businesses are making this event possible?

A: We have a number of wonderful sponsors who are supporting the Del Mar Village Association with a number of fantastic activities for those of all ages to enjoy.

The L'Auberge Del Mar Resort and Spa will be hosting the annual holiday tree lighting that will conclude the day long event at 5:30pm. Time Warner Cable, the San Diego County Supervisors, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, and the Del Mar Plaza are also major sponsors of the 2007 event.

We also have the support of a number of merchants and businesses including: Celine's Boutique and Gifts, Chiquita Abbott Realtors, Clone Printing and Duplicating/Create-A-Design, Crepes and Corks Café, Del Mar Heights School PTA, Del Mar Hill School PTA, Dexter's Deli, DiCaro, Coppo & Popcke, DiscoverSD.com, En Fuego Cantina Bar and Grill, IT2 Fixed Computer/Joel Politzer, Kil Filanc-Coldwell Banker, J Carl Shoes, Jimmy O's Sports Bar and Restaurant, Pacifica Del Mar Restaurant, Ryan's Collection, Soul Shine, Stratford Square/ Jim Watkins, Union Bank of California, and Willis Allen Real Estate.
