Perched atop the cliff overlooking the beach in beautiful Del Mar, L'Auberge Del Mar Resort and Spa is ideal for a lavish getaway in a timeless setting. L'Auberge (which means the Inn in French) boasts a unique ambiance with "California Beach Cottage" dressed up in French Provencal décor.

The hotel embraces an exquisite five-acre landscape, intertwining a coastal theme with European garden-chic. Inside, the French doors, high ceilings, and striped wallpaper make for a natural airiness that is comfortable and bright. The resort, managed by Destination Hotels & Resorts, consists of 120 high-end guest rooms and eight luxurious suites all offering ocean, garden or village views.

Location, Location, Location

While the guest rooms are cozy with their billowy duvets, marble baths, fireplaces and high-speed Internet connection, most visitors do not spend too much time cooped up in their rooms.

L'Auberge has a rooftop terrace and several banquet halls to host events with up to 300 guests. The in-house J. Taylor's Restaurant offers an intimate dining room as well as courtyard seating surrounded by waterfalls and flowers. Chef Paul McCabe blends traditional tastes with imagination for a California fusion cuisine, centered around local organic products. Durante's Pub and Bistro also offers premium cocktails and a fine selection of beer and wine.

Del Mar's year-round sunshine allows L'Auberge guests to spend their stays outdoors -- taking tennis lessons with Wimbledon pro Fernando Vincente-Ferrara, swimming in the pool or strolling the lush grounds. But the major attraction of the resort is its close vicinity to the beach and to the world-class boutiques and restaurants located just steps away in the quaint seaside village.

A Hotel with a History

L'Auberge Del Mar Resort and Spa is located on the historic site of the original Stratford Inn, which was constructed in the late 1800s. After it was torn down due to economic hardships of the early 1900s, the site eventually re-opened as the elegant Hotel Del Mar in 1912.

On opening day of the Del Mar Racetrack (July 3, 1937) Del Mar stepped into a new era of high-class glamour. Hollywood stars of the 1930s and 40s made Del Mar their new hangout, and Bing Crosby, Pat O'Brien, Jimmy and Marge Durante and Lucy and Desi Arnaz are noted as frequent guests of the hotel.

The present-day L'Auberge Resort & Spa was finished in 1989, complete with pointy, shingled roofs designed to mimic the Victorian style of the original Stratford Inn. The resort hosts a new Hollywood crowd, boasting recent sightings of Ivanka Trump, Tyra Banks and Barbara Streisand.

Treat Yourself Like a Star

You too can feel like a star with one of L'Auberge's many leisure packages. Perhaps the most enticing is its "Millionaire for a Day" package. At $2000 for a one-night stay in the Presidential suite, you may need to pick up an extra job to pay for it, but it may well be the most extravagant day of your life. The 24-hour-package is complete with limousine service to and from the airport, champagne and chocolate truffles upon arrival, a personal butler, a gourmet dinner prepared by Chef McCabe, breakfast in bed and spa pampering for two using L'Auberge's own line of product made from Chardonnay grape seeds.

Other packages for two include the "Romantic Retreat" starting at $399, the "Seaside Spa Escape" starting at $460, the "Girlfriends Getaway" starting at $510 and the "Amtrak Travelers Package" starting at $430 for a two-night stay.
