Grey is the New Black in San Diego Fashion
Published : 10/02/2007 by Jenny Herman
This fall, grey is the new black. This season's runways were overflowing with various shades of grey, from heather to charcoal, and featured striking details, patterns and textures to show off the allure and versatility of this now-fashionable neutral.
In San Diego, the possibilities are endless with so many shades and uses of this color. The color grey is actually its own complement; therefore it will match with any and every color. Grey can be worn as the base of an outfit as seen on every silhouette from dresses to sweaters to pants. This color can be paired with other gray shades for a monochrome look, worn with this fall's trendy jewel tones, or with a few of summer's bright pieces to aid in the transition into fall.
The grey area of grey
Everyone looks great in grey. However, if you believe grey is a difficult color for you to wear, then consider trying out different tones. Fashionable grey ranges from soft silver to deep charcoal, so there are many different ways for women to wear this trend.
Women with blonde hair look luminous in the two grey extremes: pale silver tones, and darker tones. Brunettes are able to wear more varied tones of grey. Grey may even be a better choice than black for read-headed gals because the grey shade will not wash out their skin tone.

Monochromatics:
Creating a monochromatic grey outfit looks extremely organic, yet fashionably chic and stylish. It also creates a vertical illusion, slimming the body and making you appear taller. Achieve this monochromatic look by adding dimension with subtle variations in textures, layering different shades of grey and playing with grey or silver accessories. With textures such as ribbing, knits and plaids, you can even add patterns without adding new colors.
Try a light grey soft knit dress, such as the Graham & Spencer sweater tank dress found at Pink Lagoon in Del Mar, and layer with dark grey tights, gloves and/or shoes. Dark grey tights can be found at American Apparel in La Jolla. Adding a brown belt achieves the same luxurious look.
For a minimalist approach, try dark grey trouser pants paired with a light grey top. Keep in mind: it's always best to wear the darker color on the bottom because it is the most slimming.
Trendy Jewel Tones:
When adding colors to your base grey wardrobe, choose the jewel tone colors of the season to instantly impact the innocence of these styles. Shades of purple, navy, teal and emerald offset classic grey in a way that is modern and vibrant.
Try pairing a Julie Haus grey tweed dress found at Haute Culture in La Jolla with jewel tone heels and an oversized clutch. Or try purple heels from Stephanie's Shoe Boutique in Bird Rock and an oversized clutch from Brass Plum at Nordstrom to perfectly complement this fall-worthy dress.
Metallics:
The metallics of fall add some shine to the season. As mentioned earlier, grey makes a great base to your outfit and draws attention to any other piece that you want to show off.
Attention: Silver and Bronze. Pair your fall grey neutral with a metallic to add some sparkle to your day look and a glamorous shimmer for the evening ensemble. And for the maximum effect, mix and match your metallics with extraordinary accessories. Silver handbags make a big statement when paired with the grays of fall.
