Breakfast at a San Diego Bar? You Bet!
Published : 01/13/2007 by Athena Davis
Everyone’s
familiar with those neighborhood bars that open around 6am and don’t close
until the wee hours of the morning. But we’ve got news: early bar hours are not
necessarily for those who prefer to drink without sleeping. In fact, if you
poke around for nearby bars with untimely hours, you’ll probably find that they
also have a tempting selection of brunch and breakfast food.
Breakfast
is, after all, the most important meal of the day. Who would have thought the same
minds behind your flavorful evening fixes were just as capable of coming up
with a nutritious and delicious start to the day? Sound a little too wholesome?
Well, you can still get your (early) drink on!
Callahan’s
Pub & Restaurant
If
you live farther east than west, and often find yourself sleeping at home on a Saturday
night instead of crashing on a friend’s couch Downtown,
try Callahan’s
Pub & Restaurant in Mira
Mesa. A great place to go the morning after, Callahan’s offers a hearty,
country-style Sunday brunch each week from 9:30am to 1pm, even though the bar
stays open serving drinks until 1 o’clock the night before. Crunchy French
toast, biscuits and gravy, and steak and eggs are sure to fill you right up and
prepare you for one more night out. Another great, and slightly smaller choice
at Callahan’s: the “Giant Cinnamon Roll,” served just a touch warm.
Urban
Mo’s Bar & Grill
Urban
Mo’s Bar & Grill, located in Hillcrest, is a neighborhood bar that offers burgers and drag shows
by evening, breakfast burritos by day. Breakfast is served daily at Mo’s, from
9:00am to 1:00pm., and includes a cross-cultural selection of morning grub.
Choose from a Hawaiian breakfast of grilled pineapple and ham, French toast, or
huevos Mexicana: three eggs smothered with melted cheddar and jack cheese
and fresh salsa, served over a tortilla. This stylish joint also holds a
special Champagne Sunday Brunch each weekend, with food served buffet style
from 10-2am, and of course, plenty to drink!
Princess
Pub & Grill
In
the Little
Italy area downtown, the Princess
Pub & Grill, a popular English pub, serves
traditional English breakfast every morning, despite being open until 1am or
midnight every evening of the week. Monday through Sunday, the pub happily welcomes
its hungover patrons with a selection of omelettes, breakfast burritos, and
slightly stranger British fare. For example, the “Princess Full English” is
described as two eggs, bacon rashers, English banger, Heinz baked beans and
grilled tomato, served with toast and coffee. The less hungry—if they can
stomach it—can try the simple Heinz baked beans on toast. All dishes go
perfectly with one of the Princess’s “Eye Openers,” including the Princess
Bloody Mary and a mysterious concoction known only as “Buck’s Fizz.”
House of Blues
There
is always something going on Downtown, even in the early morning. One especially neat event—which
even requires tickets—is found at the famous, and infamously boozy, House of Blues, on 5th
Avenue. The House of Blues offers an award-winning Gospel Brunch that serves as
a truly uplifting hangover cure. You’ll forget all about last night when you
dive into the HOB’s all you can eat Southern-style buffet. Accompanied by live
music from different gospel groups from around the region, treats like pumpkin
spice cake with butterscotch walnut filling, and Creole chicken and shrimp
jambalaya will energize you for another night on the town in no time. Call
619-299-Blue to reserve a spot at the next brunch.
