No Time to Get Away? Fake It: San Diego’s Favorite Hotel Bars and Lounges
Published : 12/14/2006 by Athena Davis
A
vacation to San Diego is like a mini-trip to Paradise. The ocean-hungry come from all over the
country, craving sunshine, poolside service and California cool—and generally, they receive
exactly what they’re looking for at one of the city’s many posh hotels. These days, you
hardly have to leave your hotel room to feel like you’re at the beach, cocktail
in hand, pool-boy in view.
But what about those of us who live here year
round? Despite the luxury of stunning sunsets and palm trees, we live in a working
world that does not provide crisp sheets or room service to just anyone. Thanks
to San Diego
tourists, however, locals can now enjoy many of the same amenities that
vacationers do—without wasting half a month’s salary on the mini bar.
Ultra-hip bars and lounges have been
popping up in hotels all around San
Diego, and the best part is that they’re happy to
provide refuge to locals and tired travelers alike. So don’t be scared to ditch
your favorite pub for a rooftop martini sometime soon. It may not be Tahiti, but with so many choices, so few cover charges,
and such amazing views, it sure is easy to pretend! Read on for some of our
favorite picks.
J6Bar, Hotel Solamar
Located
on the 4th floor of the trendy Hotel Solamar,
J6Bar was named for its location at J
Street and 6th Avenue downtown.
Prime turf like this means lots of traffic, but it also means lots of competition.
Yet J6, tucked cozily away on Solamar’s roof deck, seems to have defied the
odds.
Once
you arrive at this hotspot, it’s hard to imagine you never knew it was here.
The epitome of cool, this place glows with purple, blue and green. Veiled cabana
booths straddle the pool. A curvaceous bar offers exquisite views of downtown
and even tastier drinks. And don’t forget the flowing palms, expansive pool,
and billowing fire pit to remind us that we are, indeed, on vacation. Or are
we?
Beach Bar, W Hotel
What makes the W Hotel’s Beach Bar so different
from other bars downtown? It also boasts cabana booths and tropicalia galore,
expensively tasty drinks, and city skylines. But Beach Bar has one thing the
other bars do not: a real beach.
Okay, so seagulls and saltwater aren’t allowed. But
patrons agree that the heated sand floor is the best—and worst—feature at Beach
Bar. The novelty wears off quickly once your Manolos are covered in sand, but
one must admire the effort. If the beach makes you cranky, just try a few of
the bar’s ocean-inspired drinks, like the Passionfruit Rita or Cantaloupe
Martini, and you’ll be riding waves in no time.
Altitude Sky Bar, Marriot Gaslamp Quarter
The rooftop idea may be a bit overdone, but
Altitude Sky Bar, atop the Marriott Gaslamp, reaches unexpected heights—while
serving typical drinks. The service may not be sensational, but the music is
always fresh and beat-filled and the view of Petco Park,
plus the open sky (and massive fire pit) make Altitude’s cocktails taste far
more expensive than they actually are.
This
22nd story lounge forgoes the sand ‘n palm effect to provide its customers with
a more subtle, laid-back environment. Great for a first date, Altitude serves just
as well for meeting out-of-towners. Maybe you’ll want to get a room after all. .
.
Tower Bar, Tower 23
While the impressively-lit urban resort, Tower 23 (named
after PB’s nearby lifeguard tower, #23), looks like it might be more at home wedged
among skyscrapers and delis downtown, its luxurious, first-floor bar rests just
beyond the sands of Pacific
Beach. Tower Bar’s
minimalist interior and color-changing wave wall exude modern chic, and in its
short lifetime, this bar has quickly become a place where people come to be
seen—fast and friendly bartenders not included, unfortunately.
Though
Tower’s service is admittedly nothing special, if fancy-looking drinks, eye candy,
and the beachy views are what gets you going, where’s the problem?
