Jazz for Juvenile DiabetesPublished : 11/25/2007 by DiscoverSD
As the post-Thanksgiving “Black Friday” holiday shopping weekend comes to a close, it’s safe to say the official holiday season is upon us. San Diego—welcome “winter” temperatures, holiday-themed coffee cups, faux-snow-clad shop windows, and annual holiday charity events.
The holiday season in San Diego isn’t just about recreating your winder wonderland house display, shopping for your loved ones, and breaking-out your red and green winter wardrobe. The holiday season is a time to reflect, give thanks, and give back to those in need.
Inspired by this spirit of universal benevolence, the Downtown San Diego Rotaract Club (SDDR) once again supports the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at the annual Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes event. The seventh annual SDDR event will take place December 1, 2007 from 6-9pm at Minus 1 Lounge within The Keating Hotel.
Jazz for a good cause
SDDR’s annual Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes event will feature live jazz rhythms from The Elliot Lawrence Trio amid black and red mystique in the world renowned Minus 1 Lounge, the subterranean escape below The Keating Hotel in downtown San Diego. The Elliot Lawrence Trio has more than twenty years experience playing top venues in San Diego—and always lights up the crowd with the signature smooth jazz sound.
An expected 200 guests will sample culinary treats as they soak in vibrant jazz beats and admire the varied array of silent auction prize items donated from top San Diego businesses, including San Diego restaurants, hotels, and spas. The event menu will feature an eclectic mix of gourmet appetizers, including Bruschetta Crostini, Rullo Della Salsiccia, Artichoke and Herb Cheese Canapes, Proscuitto and Asiago Pinwheels, and Red Grapes rolled in Gorgonzola and Pecans. In Minus 1 style, each culinary delight will be paired with a specialty cocktail prepared by the expert bartenders down below.
Says SDDR past President Bridget Johnson, “Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes has evolved into one of SDDR's signature events, bringing together community members to celebrate finding a cure for Juvenile Diabetes. We are honored to work with outstanding venues and entertainers, as well as collaborate with local businesses through sponsorship and donations. This event truly is example of the generous heart and dedication of young San Diegans.”
The club
The SDDR is the region’s largest Rotaract organization, and is a branch of Rotary International. SDDR is a community service and social organization composed of young professionals ranging in age and professional endeavors. The Rotaract fosters leadership and responsible citizenship, encourages high ethical standard in business, and promotes international understanding and peace. Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes is one of SDDR’s signature annual events. The other main event is Ace of Hearts – takes place annually in June.
The cause
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 (juvenile) diabetes research worldwide. Type 1 diabetes strikes children suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications that may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. Type 1 diabetes is a disease growing to affect over 13,000 new child patients each year.
Linda Riley, Executive Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s San Diego chapter, says, “We are honored to be a part of Rotaract’s annual event, and thrilled with the success of Jazz each year. By throwing this incredibly fun party, they are bringing people together to benefit those who live with type 1 diabetes, and all of the people who love them. We all have a connection to diabetes, and by coming together, we will find a cure.”
