Whether you celebrate the Fourth of July in San Diego tanning on the beach or grilling at a barbeque, no Independence Day is complete without watching the sky alight with mesmerizing fireworks.

To help you enjoy this beautiful American tradition, DiscoverSD searched high and. . . higher for the best San Diego fireworks shows. Now, your biggest concern on the Fourth is deciding between that extra hot dog or your American apple pie a la mode. (We say go for both!)

San Diego Central:

Big Bay: It’s considered San Diego’s biggest fireworks show, and it’s also the most popular. To watch the fireworks over San Diego’s Big Bay – which spans from Seaport Village to Coronado, Shelter Island to the Embarcadero, the best seat is anywhere you find one!

Sea World:  Visit Shamu and company during the day – or just grab a seat near Mission Bay or Crown Point – to take advantage of Sea World’s legendary fireworks phenomenon.

San Diego Coastal:

County Fair: The Del Mar Fairgrounds says goodbye to the annual fair on July 4, with a fireworks display and salute to national and local heroes.

La Jolla Cove: Visit Scripps Park near La Jolla Cove for a free seaside concert to be followed by fireworks on Independence Day.

Coronado: Silver Strand: If you’re not lucky enough to live on the island, cross the bridge early to get to Coronado’s Glorietta Bay Park in time for the art show, half-marathon, annual parade, live music – and of course, fireworks.

South Bay:

National City: Head to Kimball Park for carnival rides, food booths, games, and fireworks.

Chula Vista: Bayside Park gathers everyone from pageant beauty queens to renown local restaurants with their foods to sample – but the commotion on the ground below stops when the fireworks begin above.

North County:

Vista: Brengle Terrace Park School hosts one of North County’s fireworks spectaculars. Parking may be tight, so consider parking at Vista High School and taking the free shuttle to Brengle.

Carlsbad:  Legoland closes the park at 8pm – just in time for a choreographed fireworks show.  Visit the park during the day for build-your-own American kind of fun with the classic Lego toys.

San Marcos: Bradley Park is the headquarters for old-fashioned, traditional Fourth of July fun.  Friendly competitions and food are available during the day, before the fireworks cap off the evening.
